Default Another Towing Experience

Not another one!!!

I just got back from travelling from Windsor, ON CA to Gatlinburg, TN US to camp in the Smoky Mountains for a week. I will be as brief as possible.

Truck:

See my sig and profile. 4 bicycles loaded in the bed.

Gas:

91, 92 or 93.

Trailer:

2005 Springdale 295 BHLGL - 6200lbs dry - probably tipping 7000lbs for trip.

Mileage:

300 miles on 30 gallons at each fillup on the way down. A little less on the way up. You can figure out that mileage. I was pretty happy. Averaged 60-65mph. It starts to get pretty hilly around Cincinnati. The monsoon also started around Cincinnati and did not let up for the rest of the trip down. Needless to say my 8 year old trailer did NOT like that. Weather was fair for the trip back home.

Transmission Temp:

Ranged between 145F and 160F depending on hills. Tow/Haul mode. One thing I did notice is that the temp would shoot up every time I forgot to hit the Tow/Haul button after a pit stop. After I hit the button the temps would start to drop down slowly.

Oil Temp:

Around 222F.

Coolant Temp:

Around 205F. Would shoot up to 220-225F when climbing a long hill while cranking out 4500RPMs.

That's it. Overall I'm very pleased with how the Ram performed on the 1100 mile round trip. Especially the 10mpg.

Sounds like a successful trip, congrats!

Those temps are within acceptable range for towing that much weight...

Did you feel that you needed the tow/haul mode or just used it because it was there?

I ask because I am new to towing and drove a TT home from Kingston to Toronto and played with the tow/haul mode.

I honestly don't know if it was helpful or hurtful?

I suppose the drive for the most part is pretty flat and perhaps that's why there wasn't a noticeable difference. Maybe I should try running it up some hills and then see what works best?

I pull a lot of mountains. Tow/Haul is your friend.

You definitely want to use Tow/Haul in the hills. I didn't mention the trans temp but it would get to 180F when I forgot to hit the button. Nothing critical but I like 150F better. It holds the gear for longer and also downshifts sooner to help with braking.

Sounds like all went well and you had a good trip. What gear ratio do you have?

Thanks for the info on trans temp. I always thought something was wrong because my temp would not go over 160. But now it seems normal.
