Default 4.7 4x4

I've got a good friend that might be looking around for a 4x4. I owe much to him and all his brothers here in Kentucky. Now I've actually loaned him my 5.9 4x4 while his truck was in the shop (but he's a local contractor that needs good fuel mileage). I can't say enough about the old Magnum 4x4, but good gas mileage is not one of them.

There's a 4.7 on this forum by Astartes that is the kind of a look I'd go for, but 4x4 performance, mileage I do not yet have a feel for (city, or highway... not to mention maintenance).

I bring this up because he uses a Chevy 4.8 (I think) which would be equivalent to a 283 v8. I'm not looking for flip info (just info I can pass on to a trusted friend). If you guys could assist with your opinions I would appreciate it. R...

So what kind of info do you want?
I have a 2008 4x4 1500 with a 6 inch lift and 35x12.50r20 mud terrain tires.
I get right around 11-12 in town and 15-16 on highway. If I could keep my right foot under control I could possibly get a little better mileage.

The 2007 and older 4.7 was a good engine but not high HP or amazing mpg. The 2008 and later 4.7 is higher HP and higher mpg. I have a 2010 quad cab 2wd, with HEAVY AT tires and aftermarket wheels, intake, tune, and exhuast and get about 15-18 city and 20+ hwy (best ever was 22.5 which is rare).

My take on it is, if you're gonna get crappy fuel economy, might as well do it right with the biggest engine.

My cousin had an 02 QCSB 2wd with the 4.7. He got 12 in town babying it on stock tires. I'd rather have my 5.9 Magnum 4x4 with 33's and get about that fuel economy, but with more power and 4 wheel drive.

Now, the new ones are a different animal altogether, but I still would choose a larger engine. I've never heard someone say that they wish they got a smaller engine.

Default Thanks guys on the 4.7

Sean's data 2008 and newer is what I could pass on from a stock brand perspective with tuning and small mods on mileage, city and highway. My friend has to travel quite a bit quoting jobs, hauling tools, materials for small builds (this would be up his ally).

Persuaders comments sound just like me "up one side and down the other" (I'm 5.9 4x4 on 33's) and could care less about gas mileage (I'm retired and have a 15 to 17mpg Ram Diesel for long hauls, the Ram 1500 gasser is for farm & off road). I've been a bit disconnected from the new offerings.

Thanks to all for info and the assist. R...

My 2011 4.7L 4X4 gets about 13 mpg in the city. I have K &N CAI, Magnaflow exhaust, and 285/70/17 (33in) tires. It's great for off roading, I go out to the lake every weekend. And I towed a boat without any problem.

Why not go diesel? I'm sure you could find an old 12 valve kicking around. They are one heck of a reliable motor, decent price, and I've noticed diesels getting better milage than their gas counterparts.

My comparison to trucks I've owned:

4L60E 5.3L V8 Vortec with MDS CCSB 4x4, 33" tire 17.3L/100K combined. 15 hiway.
G-56 6.7L I-6 Cummins CCSB 4X4, 35" tire 14.7L/100K combined. 13 hiway.

15L/100K = 15MPG. Google should be able to to do the conversions to MPG but the point is, my heavier diesel is raping my gas. Both trucks where equipped with similar gearing as well with 3.73 rear ends.

Salt and Vinegar: This truck info I'm looking for on the 4.7 is for a friend. But I agree with you on the diesels (I own a 24 valve 4x4 and a 12 valve 2wd).
