so lets say i do have an open rear end in my truck . can you convert the open rear end to a lsd or posi rear ? if so would it be a big job to do and exspensive ? i do not know if this is true or not but i was told that because my truck has a traction control button when traction control is on it acts like a lsd or posi . is this true ?

Traction control, at least in our ram's case does not actively tranfer power from one wheel to another, like say a Subaru. It basically cuts power to the driveline, annoying also.

I believe you can add a LSD to our trucks, but it is pricey from what I remember reading

What I have is a 2013 ram express 1500 5.7 hemi 4x4 quad cab and what I did was I drove to this flat even dirt road turned off the traction control came to a complete stop . I had it in two wheel drive , I then gave enough gas but not floored to spin the tires a good 10 feet or so and I did this twice and both times there were two tire spin marks of equal length in the dirt . Does this mean I have the LSD or posi rear in my new ram or can I still have a conventional rear end and this test is not a good test to see what kind of rear end your ram has ?
2013 Ram Sport 1500 5.7 4x4 qc no antispin
I did the same test,my results were...
Traction Control on = 2 spin marks
Traction Control off = 1 spin mark.

The jack the truck up in the air and spinning the tire test doesn't always work anymore. In my 3/4 ton that test won't work. Also if you don't have a solid axle, it's more likely to spin both tires.

The LSD/posi/tru trac/ trac-lok whatever else you might call all have the same test. Turn off traction control system make sure its in 2wd point in a safe direction now sandwich the gas pedal between the floor and your right foot (object is to try to push the pedal through the floor) if you have an LSD by whatever name it will leave two tire marks be it in dirt, gravel, sand or pavement. I have recently done this very test with my truck - one tire fryer vs my friends (both 2013 longhorns w/8sp and 3:55 - he didnt know what he had so I showed him lol) which left two nice blacks marks. The dealer told me about 1700 to have a factory unit installed the loaded lsd was about 750.00 and I live in Saint John New Brunswick Canada. Hope this helps

I agree, you do not need a pavement type burnout to tell if you have LSD.

Think of traction control as the fun governor as soon as you start to have fun its says no-no-no-no and pulls fuel and timing (it may do other things as well but this is the major function) resulting in less power which should = less tire spin and more control over truck. Bottom line unless you have what Ram calls the anti-spin rear diff (a.k.a LSD) you have a one tire fryer which in my opinion should not be an option all trucks should come with LSD unless its part of a high efficiency package or something to that effect.
