Well, I surprised myself when I traded in my F150 towards a Ram truck. I've never actually considered a Chrysler vehicle of any kind until now. I compared the big three side by side at a mega-dealer that carries all of them in one lot. This was one of those things where I read about the new tech in the new trucks (Pentastar for Ram and the Ecotec3 for GMC/Chevy) and wanted to check it out. I wasn't actually going in to buy, but things happen.
The price point and what the Ram trucks included that others didn't at a comparable price was a major factor. The test ride sealed the deal.
Well, after one wee I do not regret my decision. So, I thought I'd post my impressions after a full week in the new truck.
Comfort: Seats are on par with my F150(XLT) which is good. The quietness of the cabin is better in the Ram. They dash/instrument layout is quite nice and everything is easy to read/reach. Also nice are the rear AC vents for the passengers. Something that only comes with higher trim levels in the F150 line). It's a nice inclusion that makes a big difference in passenger comfort on these hot Texas days!
Engine/Transmission: Not even close here. I had the 3.7L V6 (not the EcoBoost) with 6 spd auto in my F150. The new Pentastar V6 with the 8 spd and 3.55 gearing has it all over the Ford. Silky smooth shifts, nice power delivery and much better gas mileage. I averaged 16.7 mpg per tank in the F150. My first tank in the Ram was 18.8 mpg. When you have a long commute like I do every mile counts! My daily commute is 35 miles each way and a mix of city/highway.
Fit and Finish: Very good. While Flame Red was not my first color choice, it's quite striking. Love the fact that Ram trucks come with wheel well liners (Ford will gladly sell them to you as an accessory
I only have a couple of minor issues here. One is my center console lid...it rattles. I also have a mysterious whistle coming from the passenger side of the truck. Can't seem to figure out what is causing it, only occurs at highway speeds, so I guess wind is whipping through something and causing the whistle. Other than that I am very happy with the switch.
I don't plan on changing/adding much. I have nerf bars on the way and will be installing Air Ride bags this weekend as well as the brake controller I had in my F150. As soon as I sell the Bakflip I had on my F150 I'll be getting a bed cover and that will probably do it....for now...
