The plugs on the lower bank(exhaust side of the cylinder head) are yttrium enhanced iridium. Basically, iridium, yes. The upper bank(intake side of the cylinder head) are yttrium enhanced copper. Basically copper. The yttrium essentially just provides longer life.

You can interchange them, the only benefit of the iridium will be longer life. I would recommend changing the intakes every 50k miles though because the coil boots end up getting seized to the plugs if you don't service them a little more often. And be sure to apply dialectric grease or you'll fight them next time too.

After ripping the boots, use a piece of copper plumbing(I think 1/2" is what it was), abuot 8" long, and push it between the boot and plug. This will break the seal.

Also, do the intake side plugs one at a time. The bolts that hold the coils also hold the intake manifold. Don't want to loosen them all at once.

So theoretically I could use copper all the way around and just change them every 50k?

As Sean indicated, go OEM, no problems no issues. "Original Equipement"

^yes use ONLY oem Bosch plugs. The exact plugs that came in the engine. They are specifically designed for the engine. There may be other plugs that will work, but nothing will work better. There is only one other person that I know of using other than oem plugs but he has big mods and spray nitrous making about 450hp with the nitrous. It took us a long time to choose a plug for his setup.

Like I said before, other plugs will work, but none will work as good as oem. With those plugs from that thread the reach is much shorter, and will effect performance/mpg. He claims it didn't, but it did. The plug isn't even extending into the head with those shorter plugs. The more central to the combustion chamber the plugs are, the better. But, it will run and probably run OK
