Default U-joing replacement; axle nut/socket size?

Hi!

I was told I put this in the wrong place, so I am reposting it here.

Haven't even drive 100 miles yet but have a horrible noise and vibration in the front end. (U-joint)

I'm sure this HAS to be covered already on here, dozens of times but not sure how to search for it.

Don't know if this is the right place to post...

A friend is going to help me with this but I need to know the size of the axle nut so that I have the right tools here!

After 143,000 miles, I am sure that I have the miles out of it!

Not sure if it shows when I post but I have a 97 Laramie, Ram 1500 5.9 pickup.

THANKS in ADVANCE!

Ben

My Dana 44 was a 1 11/16". The Dana 60 in the 2500 and 3500 should be the same.

You may have to thin the wall of the socket a little with a grinder. Mine are all 1&11/16, as well.

There is a metric equivalent I think it's like a 36mm but not sure right now.

The axle shafts for the 1500/2500 are usually only a difference of one has 3 and the other has 4 on the hub. They come apart the dame way though. I always recommend taking the axle nut off/loose while it's still on the ground. Otherwise you might have to stick a punch/chisel in the air slot (in the rotor) and get it to come around to the caliper, etc... to keep it from spinning.

That works, or if you have an extra person, you can get them to apply the brakes while you work on the nut.

it must be a Ben thing, I just chased out something very similar on mine. Turned out to be the bushing between the intermediate and exterior axle shafts inside the 4WD engage housing on the passenger side. If its a noise that sounds like someone put gravel in your diff, I'd take the shift motor off of the axle tube; you will see where a shift collar moves over the split axle. If this joint has any slop in it, that's your problem. Remove axles and replace pilot bushing. I couldn't find one, so I machined a bronze replacement. But yes, I believe it was 1-11/16". I would NOT remove the castle nut while its still on the ground. I blew a wheel bearing doing that. The compression between the nut and the inner race flags is what provides all of the bearings strength.

Hope that helps.
