Smile Charging system

Hi all, new to this forum and new to owning a Dodge Truck! I picked up a 93 Dodge D250 with 5.2 auto. I have 2 questions. As I go down the road, my battery gauge will be fine for a few minutes then fluctuate everywhere, way up, way down, etc. When it does, I notice a difference in the engine slightly surging, and of course the lights get bright and dimmer. Is this a known problem with these trucks or where should I start? Also should it take 3800 rpms to shift into 3rd gear from 2nd? Tranny is supposedly rebuilt. Thanks for any and all answers.

Check the battery connections first. Clean and tight, no corrosion.

Check the fusable link, and the body ground from the engine to the firewall.

Load test the battery.

Have the alternator checked. If it was sitting the brushes may be corroded.

I'd do that ^ in that ^ order.

Right off the positive terminal of the battery. Follow it back until you find a piece of lead core wire. That wire is designed to "burn out" in case of a system overload. However after some age/time they can become corroded and cause system havoc.

ok that looks to be in good shape. Is the voltage regulator part of the alternator or seperate on these engines?

The regulator is in the computer, unfortunately.
As for the shift issue, the throttle kickdown may need adjusting. It's located at the throttle body. Pinch and adjust. Still seems kinda high (at moderate throttle), even for a maxed out throttle kickdown cable. Wide open throttle would be more around 4,800 rpm.

Ok, finally had a chance to get out and look around. I think I found it, the Ground strap from engine to firewall was in bad shape where it grounded at firewall. Will give a better update soon after i drive it some. Thanks all!
