would the transmission hold up to the extra power? i'm thinking about doing an upgrade to my 318, but my biggest worry is turning the trans into a weak link. am i just worrying too much!?

The kind of power you're looking at from something like a 390 stroker would put a heavy tax on the clutches. The hardware would be okay on street tires, but at the drags with hard launches, you'll start shredding hard parts. A stocker will wear out quicker with the greater power input, just as it would if you towed heavy trailers frequently. North of 400hp and the resultant torque increases, you want to make driveline upgrades front to rear.

You know of any links to a milder upgrade? I'm not looking for anything crazy, but my engines got 125k on it so I might as well add some power with a rebuild. Now, I drive maybe 1k miles a year in my truck, but I plan on keeping it until the wife says no more. So until then I want a bit more than 220hp..especially since 220 doesn't feel like it with 35" MTs on it!

Same build, just back off on the cam a bit and skip the turbo. With good flowing heads you'd have an easy 450hp with easily as much torque. The stock OD's were originally designed for a max of 400ft/lbs input. While it's not an easy feat to channel that much power to the OD alone thanks to the kickdown (floor it and you're back in third), you can see how much less engine you can have and still be pushing the OEM limits.
