Default New Dodge Ram Owner

Hello to everyone. I just purchased my first Dodge Ram, a 2013 Laramie, so excuse the newbie questions. But - as seen in the picture - my Laramie comes with two antennas, a short one on top of the cab and a long one on the hood. First, what is each of these antennas used for? Second, if I wanted to replace the longer one on the hood (to decrease the size and/or increase reception), what are some recommendations?

Thanks again.

the shark fin one is for your NAV.

shortening the hood one with decrease reception most certainly. Most people don't mind because they don't listen to AM/FM.

Welcome to the forum. We are glad to have you

Thank you for the quick response. Is satellite radio (SiriusXM) received through the shark fin or the hood one?

The roof antenna is three antennas in one, it contains two patch antennas, one for satellite radio and the other for GPS. In the fin is the antenna for communication with the Sprint network.

Congratulations on the new truck! Since your question about the blade antenna has already been answered, I'll focus on the AM/FM whip. If you want a smaller one for looks, just google "Stubby antenna." The main issue you will run into is that current technology is a limiting factor in reception. NONE of the stubby's offer good reception. They will receive just fine in an around the transmitting station(s); however, when you get out in the sticks, your choice of stations that come in well is greatly deminished.
AM/FM is pretty much a thing of the past if you listen mostly to XM and/or your own media. If this is the case for you, get after that stubby!
Again, Congratulations on the new truck!
