Default Plow on a 13 1500 possible with v6?

I have enjoyed my first week with my 2013 longhorn. So much I want to replace a 2000 f150 I use for plowing with a new tradesman.

I have never seen a 2013 ram 1500 with a plow.

Is it possible to plow with the V6 or is it asking for trouble? Do I have to go 2500 or hemi ?

It is for my driveway only. No commercial work - light duty plowing.

I searched this forum and found nothing on plowing with a brand new 1500 v6 or hemi. I checked google and all says no due to electronic power steering.

I still think there must be some aftermarket solution. Poly plow maybe?

You can do it... the amount of wear and tear on the truck though would be pretty bad. I have plowed with a 1500 before, but never with a v6. A lighter plow would be best, and suspension parts from timbren will help with sag from the plow. I may recommend getting a 4 wheeler otherwise and getting a plow for it for your driveway, that way you have something for going off roading as well, other than your truck.

how long is your driveway and what gears do you have?

If it's a less than mile long drive, I'd say go for it!

Just keep it low gear to be sure!

Driveway is about quarter mile and wide.

I'd order or locate brand new ram 1500.

All sales material shows tradesman with ram boxes but is it really available?

I have the luxury longhorn but I want to find

Regular cab 4x4 with ramboxes, vinyl seats n floor and whatever else I need to plow as efficiently as possible.

I wouldn't put a plow on a new 1500. Everyone will say you can do it, and there are those who have....used to be able to get away with it on older 1500's.....but on the newer models (air suspension + plow = bad) ones its just a plain bad idea. 1500's aren't setup for that kind of stress on the front end and the minute you put a plow on a new 1500 the dealership will most likely deny you any kind of warranty service on your front drive train. I had a heck of a time on my 2008 ram 3500 getting warranty repairs done because it didn't come from the factory with the snowplow prep package and I had a plow put on to plow my 1/2 mile drive.

If you want to plow with a truck, even for a short driveway, I would get an old beater to do it with.

I just thought

Brand new reliability and efficientcy with ramboxes would make a great plow truck.

Maybe not. I see.

Have not read the current Ram nor GM('14) manuals, but did see in print from Fords that the electronic power steering systems & plows are a bad idea. Thinking it would just be asking for trouble if you go forward with it.

Would buy a beater or a used 2500 & then do your neighbors driveways(for $$$ to offset the cost) too.

A 1/2 ton will do the job fine for what your talking, the city I work for uses jeep Cherokees to plow our parking ramps and down town parking lots and those little things are amazing! You will want to put some weight in the bed and yes most of the plow manufactures make plows for 1/2 trucks now. Snowdogg, western and myer are just a few. We have had good luck with the western hts 7.6' units

Can also put a plow on a Honda civic:

But still doesn't make the 2013 1500 front end and CV joints less fragile and prone to failure. The days of the 1500 front ends being bullet proof are long gone as manufacturers decided to try to make 1/2 tons ride more like cars and less like trucks.

Reason you can get away with in in older Cherokees is they don't have IFS and the Dana 30 front axles are reliable and easily rebuilt.

Several of my co-workers have plows on their 09 and 10 ram 1500 they plow their driveways and several neighbours friends etc without problem. Please keep in mind they are not using plows meant for commercial use, but we get lots of heavy wet snow neither of them had problems with the front ends of their trucks (I did but I don’t have a plow). Both have recently traded in their trucks for 2013 rams. One already has the plow rigging installed (had the plow frame modified slightly plus beefed up) his plow is operated with a winch - up and down (Canadian tire/ Wal-Mart plow)and has to manually adjust the blade angle works no problem. My other co-worker had a Snowdogg plow electric over hydraulic and had to sell it cause they couldn't get it to work. According to him there was a problem with the electric power steering module having static interference from the plow. I asked the dealer and they said it was overloading the electrical system of the truck. Not sure who is correct but either way there might be problems with having some plows installed. Hope this helps
