Default Ram 1500 cummins swap!!??

As the title says, I have a 02 ram 1500 I am looking at possibly swapping in a 4bt cummins into. I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a good transmission to throw behind this application? The truck will be a daily driver and four wheeler tower at most. Am looking for reliability, cool factor, and mileage. Any input on transmissions or ideas or concerns I should worry about please post. I am just starting this and trying to get as much info as possible. Thanks guys!

Guy on another forum blew the gas 360 in his, so he swapped in a 12v 5.9 in its place. He used a 47RE or 48RE, a bolt in. Tokk him a few months to get everything wired up right, another few months to get everything talking correctly so that gauges, etc worked coorectly. I don't know what a 4BT will bolt to, but you will most likely need custom mounts, trans adapter depending on what you decide to use, then comes the question of whether you want your gauges and shit to work.

Wow its been a while since I have been here. Sorry for the wait! But as far as it goes, a shop should be able to get everything done nicely yes?? also, with the 4bt, would a normal ram 5.9's tranny work? and if so how difficult would it be to put a doubler to it as well so that the little 4bt would still be able to do decent work??

Auto or Manual? Most of the 4BTs I've seen have some sort of GM tranny behind them (TH400). 4btswaps has a lot of stories and build threads.

Just remember that the transmission needs to handle the torque load as well as have the right gearing. A lot of gas trannys can't handle it and/or will cause the RPMs of the diesel to be WAY TOO HIGH.

Good luck! Sounds like a fun project.

Right. And don't forget the differentials. The rear end (and front differential) need to be able the torque. Probably won't have to be replaced immediately, but eventually they will probably fail, depending on how the truck is used.

A TH400 eh? I figured since the 4bt was basically a smaller version of the 5.9 that it would work with the stock tranny. I am wanting to make it a manual so that I could put a doubler behind it. I was hoping that would make it easier to control the torque and allow to travel at even highway speeds while keeping my stock axles and gearing

I wouldn't use a TH400. The 700R4 would be a better choice due to the overdrive ratio.

I don't see why a 46RE wouldn't work. If you are wanting a manual, an NV4500 would handle all you wanted to throw at it and then some.

The nv4500 would be ideal. What parts from my truck stock would match over?? Would I have to change my brake system or stearing systems much??? for example

Steering no, brakes yes. Diesel produce no vacuum, so you'll need either a vacuum pump (easiest), or a brake system off a diesel 2500...

Probably just go with a vacuum pump. Also, how hard is it to find one of these engines!!?? I cant find any out here in bare nothing wyoming!! The other thing I thought of and read about, is will I have to alter my firewall? If the transmision sits in its stock(ish) position, will the 4bt be to far forward to mount up properly?? There was a guy with a build thread on here and said he had to push the firewall back 4 inches, but he had a 2nd gen bodystyle and mine is a 3rd gen
