Default WTF. Gear Ratio and LS Diff

I have a 2014, 1500, with 3.55 open diff's. I wanted to change over to a 4.10 or a 4.56 with a limited slip. Ive just been told that the 2014's can not be converted in any amnner without swapping out the entire front and rear diff assemblies.
IS THIS TRUE?

For any model year, the front diff has to be the same gear ratio as the rear diff.

2013 and 14's Use ZF diffs, which have no aftermarket support yet. You would have to get 3.92's gear sets from the dealer as you best option.

If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, both differentials have to be the same ratio

2014 Ram RT models have a 4.10 ratio, ( i don't know what manufacturer builds it, maybe Dana or Spicer or ... ???? )

Since 2011 Ram 1500 trucks have used the ZF differentials, when they have the 3.21, 3.55, & 3.92 ratios, all 3 of these can be had with the Limited Slip unit

I believe that the ZF differentials have the Ring Gear welded to the Carrier housing, unlike other brands that have them bolted together
this sort of explains it

old style 2010 & earlier ram rear differential

You have to change both the front and rear gear sets to the same gear ratio. I don't think that is what you are asking though? The newer rams have the gears welded to the carrier which is probably where the confusion of replacing the whole differential comes from. But from what I understand, if you get a carrier/LSD unit and gears for the older style and just put those in place of your current ones they will fit in. Which opens up all sorts of aftermarket options since they have used this rear for many years without major changes. Maybe someone else can chime in but I'm pretty sure there are quite a few people who have done this already.

AWESOME post on this very issue on ramforum-dot-com
by Josh aka fasthemiram12, 4G performance section,

Thread: Detroit Tru Trac for 2011+ ZF

sorry can't post direct link

I just had a DTT and 4.10's installed in my 2012 Ram.
It was quite costly.... Roughly 1500.00
This is only for those that want to go all out race or serious 4x4'n

Here is what is needed:
1. 9.25 Ring and Pinion. Any ratio size you want, 4.10, 4.56 etc.
2. 9.25 Detroit Tru Trac. Install as normal.
3. 2011+ Ram (Drivers Side) ZF Axle Shaft (Longer Side) Part # 68140297-AA
4. Master Install Kit

The reason a long side shaft is need is because the OEM ZF LSD is offset while the 9.25 DTT or 9.25 LSD is not.

For those with 2011+ that just want to have 4.10 or 4.56 gears and already have a Factory LSD, all that is needed is to machine the OEM carrier for the older 9.25 bolt pattern and recess the holes.

Those that do not have an OEM LSD would obviously need to purchase one.

Gear swap for Front IFS for 2012 and Up is not available.
The Ring gear is welded to the carrier and is not serviceable at this time.
Only option is to Swap to an older 8.0 IFS Assembly from a 06-11 Ram and then order gears accordingly.
Note: It is better to get whole assembly not just the chunk.
IFS, CV Axles, Diff bracket, Front Driveshaft etc.

Thanks for the posts.
Yep, i do know that both front and rear diffs must be the same ratio.
Apparently due to the combination of the welded and too small carrier housing and a new hole pattern it's a LOT more involved then previous years. I think i can switch to a 3.92 and thats it.
