Default Tonneau Covers

OK,

Too early to tell but I didn't expect this.

Whether the MPG computer is correct or not.

I put a new cover on the bed and got a full one(1) MPG increase in fuel efficiency based on the computer.

I have never been a big believer but that did get my attention.

What do ya'll think?

Real or memorex?

BTW, my first thread.

Has it ever been proven that a tonneau improves mpg? I personally didn't notice much change one way or the other after I put mine on.

Just curious over what time period you saw the change? How many miles/fill ups? Is this strictly the EVIC or have you done the math yourself?

I'm not an aerodynamics specialist, but it would seem obvious. Yes, I would think they improve mpg. I don't by how much mpg's would improve, but it's believable. The tonneau cover encloses the big "air-catcher" and allows the air to flow over the tailgate as opposed to getting slowed down in the bed. I've always had tonneau covers from day one so I've never compared without one.

i have read that the wind turbulence causes an air pillow which eliminates the drag one would think an open bed causes.

I have drove the truck without and with the cover.
With the cover yes you do get half a mile to a mile increase on a galon.

I dont know about a cover, but no tailgate definitely makes a difference. I live in Lubbock and have family that lives in Dallas. Its about a 350 mile drive one way (all highway). On my 2004 Ram I had, I would use about 3/4 tank to get there. One trip, I took off my tailgate just to see if it would make a difference on the gas mileage. I got there in 1/2 a tank!! it saved me 1/4 tank of gas having the tailgate off. So, every trip to Dallas from then on out I always took the tailgate off
