Talking Stock engine rebuild?

I recently stripped off the heads on my 5.9 to repair a blown head gasket. I'm trying to decide if I should just go ahead and put new rings in it since I'm most of the way there now anyway. My questions are
Has anyone tried to rebuild the lower end w/o removing from the truck?
Any sources for an inexpensive lower end or rearing kit?
I've seen a lot of these motors going over 300k, mines at 250 now and has run great except was losing water. So any other trouble that I might be able to avoid I would appreciate info about.
I have rebuilt plenty of motors so I have experience, just not on this motor.
Btw what color were these engines painted at the factory. I degreased any hint of color off the block. Just figure I will clean it up while I'm there.

Rebuilding in place (down and dirty) can be done, it's just a PITA since you have to drop the pan (might have to raise the engine to do it) so you can access the rod bolts. Dunno how much side room you'd have to run a honer. I think the engines were painted black from the factory. You should go old school Chrysler blue/turquoise (or hemi orange lol).
