Smile Possible 2012 New for my dad

All:

My dad just retired and is looking to get a new Ram 1500. He has been wanting one for about 5 years well ok 10 years now He just retired at the rip old age of 50. This will be his first new truck since a 1990 ford F150.

Anyway just wondering what you all thought would be a good deal. There is a 2012 brand new, about 120 miles on it. Laramie Longhorn for sale at a local dealership. The MSRP is around $53,000.
What would you consider a good deal for this?
He wasn't looking at anything this "fancy" but the dealer gave him a verbal quote of $40,000.

Any advice on buying this? The 2014s should be out soon so I would think he should be able to get them to move on the price. Here is the window sticker for all the options.

He will be trading in a 2006 tacoma with 35K miles.

Any advice or tips you have to make this a great deal? Like including extended warrenties window tint, all weather mats, etc... It already has a spray in linex.

I guess any other advice you would have would be great! What would be just a great price?

Thanks fella's

$13000 off is a great price I'd say. I realize its allready almost 2 years old but still a great truck.. As always I'd try and get them down more if possible, but sounds like its shaping up to be about the best deal you'll find.. IMO

Nic, thanks for the quick response! My gut tells me the same thing! We will see what we can do. My dad lives about 5 hrs away so I am going to head down there to do some asking around here in an hour or so. I will let you all know what I find out!

I got almost 10k off of my ’13 Express (36.5k – 27.5k) and it was only on the lot for 2 days almost 6 months ago, so ‘14s were still a long ways off at the time. 13k off of a 1 year old truck is a good deal, personally I think there is still meat on the bone considering that truck is almost 2 years old. My feeling would be he could probably get the same truck in a 2013 for that same price very soon, and the 2013s are nicer. Use that as a bargaining chip to get the price lower.

I have a 2012 Outdoorsmans 4X4 loaded with just about everything the one your dad is looking at minus the leather heated seats. I had them add spray in bedliner and trailer brakes and I rolled out the door @ $36,000 and that was in 2012. You should be able to get them down more. With the 2014 rolling out, your dad will take a big hit as soon as he rolls it off the lot. Regardless of miles it's still going to be considered a 2 year old truck. Make sure he lets the dealer know that he understands that and the dealer really needs to come down quite a bit more to compensate. Of course this is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth but I do believe that with the resale hit your father is taking the dealer should help out quite a bit more.

That is my exact truck with the exception of the 430N radio vs the 730 - I liked the 430N navigation better. It's an awesome truck!

I got mine in Jan 2013 for $42K out the door - no trade.

I bet you could get it to just under 40K now.

The LIMITED package is sexy

Verbal quotes mean nothing. Any dealer that won't put their numbers on paper isn't worth a hoot. If you can get them to put it on paper that would be a good start.

Pitty it isnt close to the end of the month. Dealers because of monthly quota's are more likely to cut you a break. I would walk in with a price in mind for your tacoma and tell them $37500 and you final offer of $38500 BEFORE TRADE IN. Cant hurt to try right.

always negotiate sale price before you tell them a trade is involved. With a unit that old they won't care what day of the month it is. They will be happy to get rid of that expesnive vehicle that has been sitting on their lot forever

Great advice here fella's. Good to have a few other prices that ya'll paid for models. Yes for sure you want to negotiate the price of the truck then the trade. My dad is coming down Tuesday to talk with them. Verbal quotes don't mean anything for sure! They actually have 2 of these trucks in stock both similarly equipped!

I think you guys are right on, that a few grand under 40 should be a great deal. Great points about it being almost 2 years old. He will more then likely keep it for 15+ years as his last one was over 20, so depreciation isn't a huge deal, but a good bargaining chip! Plus money is money, so the more he can save here the better.

I really like the limited package. the leather quality is just fantastic I am blown away! I will keep you all posted on what he ends up doing. He is patient, hence the 22 years since his last truck. If the deal doesn't work then it doesn't so he will walk.

Also there are several other dealers here and we will be going to a few others to talk prices. Others don't have any 12's left, but at least we could get a quote for trade and price for a 13. I did this last time I bought a car. Got them from 12K for my trade to 25k. Of course it was their "best price" each time... Likewise the price of the car the same. Boy they leave a lot of money on the table and the average person just takes it...
