Question New ram 4x4 owner transfer case whine issue

Just bought a 2001 ram 1500 5.9 4x4 today so I'm driving it around being proud of my truck and I noticed a little bit of a whine coming from the transfer case anyone experience this? And this is while it was in 2wd also when I put it in 4wd there was some grinding. Any information will help thanks a lot.

Twiily12; this sounds like a job for TransEngineer. I know the man is filled with tremendous knowledge and experience on this subject.

He is on here.

First off, I'd check to make sure there's enough/good fluid in the transfer case.

How did you shift into 4wd?

4Hi or 4Lo?

Just curious since you're a new owner.

slight grinding into and out of 4 low is normal. If I remember correctly from my 2000 ram 1500 either the owner's manual or behind the visor are instrustions for 4x4 use. I typically always try to shift into 4L with gear shift in neutral while coasting 1-2mph. For the whine in 2H any way to see if he rebuilt or upgraded something in it? Are you sure the whine is coming from the transfer case?

Not completely positive on the whine but it is loud in the cab and starts to whine around 40 mph and never gets any louder at increased speeds and if I let off the gas the noise goes away
