Shifting 4Lo can grind from a stop. Like Simple Guy, I try and shift into 4Lo while rolling under 3 mph.

I'm wondering if the whine isn't from something else.

It could be the rear axle... Mine was rebuilt before I got it. I think at 95k miles.

if it is in the transfer case it kind of sounds like a noisy bearing. i had an isuzu trooper that had a noisy bearing on the output shaft, it lasted for 5 years whining away. it always sounded like a cheap import manual trans in reverse. but look for play in the driveshaft yoke to see if a bearing is going on it. is there any vibration?

That is very similar to what it sounds like and when I checked the u joints everything seemed tight and there is no vibration. Might just have to fork out the cash to have it diagnosed

If you are driving, do you hear a whine, then it goes away when you lift off the gas?

Yes the whine starts at about 40 mph and is constant at any speed above that and when I lift of the gas it goes completely away and will do mb power wagon

I'm betting its your ring and pinion or bearings. My POS truck is doing the exact same thing, but I couldn't really hear it over my exhaust until a shop pointed it out this morning.

Sad thing is, my axle was rebuilt by the previous owner a year and 3 months ago, and the shop that did it is out of business. Only 11k miles on it.

Edit: I'm going to check the fluid level in the differential tomorrow. Hopefully, that could be it, but knowing my luck, it probably isn't.
