Default Oil monitor

I was told the last time I went in for an oil change, that my truck is equipped with an oil condition monitor and that they go about 5000 miles between changes. When I bought ti new, they said 3000 mile oil changes where required. Also read that the "change oil" display was milage only. What gives? Have I been changing too early and wasting money?

Edit
Looked it up on line. A bit vague, but says do it within 500 miles of display coming on or 6 months. Guess I wasted my money.

The dealer is full of it as there is no requirement to change oil at 3K, that is old school. As to the oil indication, there are a number of variables which trigger an oil change is needed, such as mileage, time usage etc. I would not expect to see a change indication before 5K. As a matter of perspective, I have just over 6K on mine since last oild change and no oil change indication yet.

Yes it has an oil life monitor. IT varies depending on how you drive. Mine goes between 5K and 7K. I only change it when it comes on. Sales people don't know crap about the oil changes and depending on the service guy they will tell you different to get you to come in early.

Default Oil monitor

I don't think my Ram has an oil life monitor, and I'm sure to have violated every known recommended oil change interval. Last change was 19 months ago at the dealer using full synthetic, but it's taken me this long to just accumulate 3000 miles. The manual said I should have changed at 6 months, and generally accepted knowledge says never to exceed 1 year.
I do try to always drive far enough to expel any condensation though. So, do you think that if I did have oil life monitor, it would be screaming at me by now ?

I believe the oil life monitor is standard on all of them I thought. The dealer would have reset it so that is why you may not have seen it. I do not it looks at time, as in day since the last oil change. I believe it looks at engine hours and conditions of the engine.

However I have been proved wrong on this forum many times.

Thats right, You can reset the Oil Change Reminder yourself. You don't need the Dealer to do anything. The instructions are in your vehicle manual. I believe it tells you to turn on your ignition, press the throttle pedal down 3 times within 10 sec & then turn off the ignition. If you have done it correctly, the reminder ding & message go off.
