Default 1984 318 - newb

So I picked up a 1984 dodge ram 150 with a 318 police motor (questionably) in it . it hasn't run in 15 years , sitting in the Nevada desert . so I get it home and prep it for its first start . oil up the cylinders , change the oil , fuel filters etc . I get it started and it doesn't miss a beat , as long as its at about 4000 rpm or higher it runs strong , doesn't miss , no smoke - but once it goes below about 4 k it wont run at all and it wont idle . so I replace all of the vacuum lines on the carb and air cleaner , the pcv valve and the egr valve on top of the manifold , still wont idle . I had the carb cleaned and im still getting the same deal .couple questions , Shouldn't this motor run steady without the vacuum lines or air cleaner assembly hooked up . at least a rough idle ? Spark is strong down low and I have replaced the spark control module and the ballast resistor before I even started it . if you have any suggestions on my next step , it would be very helpful .

does it have a 2 barrel carb? it almost sounds like it might have a vacuum leak or possibly flooding. have you looked down the carb with the engine running?

A used carb, baked in Nevada for 15 years? That carb is, literally, toast. Cleaning won't cut it. It needs a rebuild. Sounds like a massive vacuum leak. Now, you can cap all the small vacuum ports, leaving only the PCV hooked up and it'll run fine. Once you get it running well, you can go back and plumb in the little ones, but for now just isolate everything. Something to consider on the vacuum leak. If you have power brakes, and you probably do, cap off the vacuum tee that's supplying the vacuum to the brake booster. That can be a massive leaker, since it too has been cooking, and is 30 years old now. See if it settles down. Even if that solves the immediate problem, get right on a carb solution as the one you have ain't gonna hold up. It's even worse now with the alcohol in the gas. My '84 RamCharger has a vacuum advance on the distributor. If yours does, you need that one hooked up.

i own a 81 dodge ram prospector and i have a 318 bored 30 thousands high rise intake and a few more little upgrades and i spent more money then i needed to, if your going to buy a new carb do not buy an edelbrock i went with a 600 Quick Fuel Technologies along with a wiend intake manifold and its alot better now.
