Question 1997 RAM Oil Change Questions

Hi Everyone,

Just joined this forum this morning, because I have some questions. I want to change the oil on my 1997 Dodge RAM 1500 5.2L and I'm just wondering what you guys would recommend as far as the changing procedure, oil and such? I did some searching here and found a lot of people use synthetic oil, like Castrol and Mobil.

Would you guys recommend flushing it first? And if so what kind of flush should I get?

What would you guys recommend for the filter change? I see a lot of people dislike Fram, but prefer Napa.

I've also noticed that whenever I've been out driving a bit and come to a stop (at a stoplight, stop sign, etc.) the oil light on the dash will come on and flicker, until I start driving again. Any suggestions on what that could be would be appreciated.

Thanks!

How is your oil pressure?

I run Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic and a Bosch or Mopar filter on my truck. I change my oil every 5k miles.

Default Oil and idle.

What is your idle speed ?, I had same issue and raised my idle a touch and took care of it.Oil I am currently using high mileage gtx castrol because my engine is at 107+miles and using Mopar oil filter and a touch of motor kote oil additive.

Good question and a good place to start. Synthetics are well worth it and invest in a good filter. I use Amsoil for my synthetic oil and Wix is generally regarded to be among the best oil filters.
