Default OK, Old vs Newer in 4x4

I'm old hat off road with the 98 magnum 4x4 small lift but it goes anywhere, mud, steep hills, snow, rivers and can climb a tree. So bought a used Hemi 5.7 that looks off the show room. I see the pics on our board here with Hemi's out there in the mud (and they can't be cheap).

1. How do you make the leap when they look that good?
2. How can they out do a magnum off road?
3. Or am I seeing 4.7 in picture galleries and 5.7 are to much power/tranny?

I've never owned a Hemi.............Please educate me. Us old guys like off roading too. R...

It's tough.

I had a 97 2500 HD that I would drive into a bridge if I wanted to, the new truck, I don't even want to get a scratch on it!

Its simple, point and shoot. Put the hemi in 4hi/low depending on terrain. Point headlights where you want to go, floor it!

It is a tough one but here is how I justify it.

I bought a new Jeep Wrangler years a go and pin stiped it all to hell in the mountians of Colorado on a 9 day wheeling trip. At first I almost cried and then I realized that those scratches told a story. After that, when I saw the scratches, I smiled.

With my new RAM, I am taking the same attitude. I will do what I can not to scratch and beat it up but if it takes on a few scars in the back country then so be it. I mean, why else would I have bought a 4wd truck? I did, however, already apply three coats of synthetic wax on the new paint and plan on hitting it was a coat about every three months. That way, maybe it will fair better with the tree branches.

The big fella is going on three wheelin' trips in the next year so that beautiful paint is going to tell a few stories soon, hahaha.

Default I agree with all so far

If we're going off roading we do it. My friends have been ragging me about my old Magnum 5.9 (it's not banged up too bad, but the 98 has the mange, a few dents and things I don't repair). But I understand the characterisics of my previous 4x4 on/off road experience (much less power). The horse power on the Hemi has me scratching my head (it'd be kind of like flunking the 12th grade).

Are there clubs for hemi's just for off road for the different aspects of off roading so that I could adjust and reduce the impact of the learning curve (I'm liability only by choice on all vehicles). I can do the basic mods and adjust for levels of difficulty (but I will run it on the road also). I would probably be more comfortable in the Magnum 5.9 because I know it's limitations.

Thanks in advance for the advice. I recognize it's apples and oranges between the vehicles but the nature is the same. And then there's the aftermarket. I don't do recreation vehicles (lost the leg above the knee 19 years and have rods in the real left leg) So I want use it to haul things like ATV's (hence the Magnum 5.9). Nobody around here does Hemi off road. I'd like to hang with them without major destruction.

Thoughts R...

The Hemi works great offroad! Especially when it has a Power Wagon wrapped around it! Here's a pic of mine hitting the trails not but 3 days after I bought it! Still had temporary tags, LOL! (sorry about the odd pic quality, took it with my cell phone):
[IMG][/IMG]

Don't worry about the Hemi having too much power, it has just the right amount!

I typically wheel with a whole bunch of Jeeps, I just have to be aware of the fact that I may not be able to take the same lines on obstacles that they do. The long wheelbase makes me drag belly a lot and the width makes the truck interesting to squeeze between trees, LOL! It does great offroad though! Surprised the heck outta my Jeep friends, they nicknamed it the "Trail Whale" hence my username. The only things that have stopped me offroad have been a lack of ground clearance and the stock all terrain tires. (all terrains don't seem to like thick greasy clay mud!) Those points will soon be rectified though, I've bought some 37" Goodyear Wrangler MTR Kevlars and a Carli 3" lift kit! (the tires are here and the lift is on order!) The only time I've gotten stuck thus far was due to lack of traction in clay- had to winch myself up a whole big portion of a trail, just couldn't get traction!

Suffice it to say- you'll like how a Hemi does offroad!!!!!

look at it this way. if your engine has more power it will take less work to do the same thing. and when it's time to see the mud fly the hemi gets the job done quite nicely. lol. i got an 07 power wagon with the 345 hp hemi and love it. i don't have to push the engine half as hard to do the same thing my buddy does with his f150 with a triton 5.4. unless i'm pulling him out cuz he was dumb enough to follow me. lol

Default Thanks again

I now recall in several of my four wheeler additions they drove a Power Wagon for one year and put it to the test for 20,000 miles (all terrains). I'll go back and dig them up (quite interesting I recall, it was like a Power Wagon saga). I believe the 05 Hemi 5.7 SLT 4X4 I purchased would weigh about 1800 LBS less than the PW not to mention the different suspension and design characteristics (I was hoping you PW guys would differentiate between the various Hemi 5.7 4x4 products). Clears it up for me.

I still plan to post pics (just finished the wheel bearings and replacing a bent shock), last will be a clutch fan and a full set of AT's. Note, it was not wrecked, just bottomed out in the mud on left side (like a big jump) and sat there until extracted and the car dealer turned it over to the Insurance co. (who auctioned it off).

I have a 03 4.7 with the 5-speed new venture 3500 tranny. I'm not afraid to use it like a truck and sometimes even a weekend bush beater. It has never let me down, I had numerous occasions after we call it in schuylkill county Pennsylvania a "bush ride" where my passengers were amazed that. Full size pickup did and went theimage.jpg
