Default 275/70-17 tire PSI

my tires say to to put a max of 80psi in the tire. my door jom doesnt even have the reccomended PSI for a 17inch rim. it only has it for a 16 inch rim which they say is 35PSI. so should i put 80 PSI in my tires? or maybe 60, 70 PSI? what do you guys reccomend? my tires are Cooper Discoverer A/T3 if that helps.

I'd probably run them at 45 front and 40 rear and go from there. Just keep an eye to see if they're wearing correcting or not. The max psi shown on the tire is to acheive the max load rating for them. It's not a recommend pressure to be running 100% of the time.

The recommendation usually doesn't vary a whole lot between 16, 17, or even 20 inch wheels for normal use. I'd stick around 40 psi as a starting point for front and rear.

i had them at 40psi for a few months and it rode fine. MPGs sucked. and looking at the tire they always just seemed a little low. i filled them all up to 60 psi and i get much better MPGs and the tires look nice and full. im just not sure if 60 Psi was too much or too little. but there is an improvment from 40 to 60psi.

Let me know how the 60lbs go. 40 psi is what is recommended on my 17's, but if I get better mileage I would try it. I would worry about wear though.

I run 55 all the time. They wear fine, and mileage absolutely got better. This is on 285/70R17

I would guess every tire varies a bit

To the OP, i would confidently venture to say your new tires are a load range E tire, heavy duty, the reason the door jam is different is that form the factory most trucks come with either a B-C rated tire or a P tire which is a lot lighter tire. Most E rated tires max at 80 PSI and with a half ton i have found that 60 in front and 50-55 in the rear is about perfect for my truck with E range tires and keeps them wearing smooth and about the best ride point

I've always done 35 to 40 with my 265/70/17 Cooper AT/3. My tires wear equally.
