Default 1997 Ram Towing Advice Needed

I have a 1997 Dodge SLT Laramie, 5 spd with a 318 4x4.

I need to tow a 29 foot Wilderness travel trailer from Missouri to Pennsylvania.

The trailer's GVWR is 7,500 lbs.

Besides installing an electric brake controller, weight distributing hitch and the appropriate plug what else do I need to do to make this move as smooth as possible?

Any advice would surely be appreciated.

Thanks,

M Karns

I'd do a tune up, change the fluids, and just take your time getting there.

Does your truck have an external tranny cooler?

If so, with the stuff you're going to put on you're good. Just remember to stay out of OD...

Doing a complete fluid swap is a real good idea, I did that before I hauled a car from Phoenix to Los Angeles...

Good idea if those services are due now to shortly after arriving at said destination. And defititely don't go getting in a hurry.

I have a 5 speed manual tranny. Should I keep it out of 5th gear?

Yes, unless completely flat terrain you should stay out of 5th (over drive).

^^^what he said.

Even if the truck has the power to do it, it won't cool properly, and half the time, you waste more fuel...
