Default Lumbar support

From what I've read a cheap plastic spiral gear is responsible for lumbar support failure in both manual and power seats.
My question is do I have to take the drivers seat completely out of the truck to replace this gear or can I just unbolt the seat and lay it back to access the underside for repair?
