Default Front-end Vibration

New to the forums but I have searched them and have not found any with the issue I am having. I have a 98 Ram1500 Quad Cab 4wd. This past w/e I personally replaced the front u-joints and the axle hub assemblies to address a very bad clunking clicking sound. It was the u-joints. They were terrible. Everything up front is original and needs some love. There are 125 kilomiles on the truck. The hub assemblies seemed fine but were easy enough to change so what the heck. Now I have a higher pitched vibration that is there as soon as I start rolling but very noticeable above 35 mph. This noise was not there prior to my repairs. It remains if I drop into neutral. It goes away immediately if I shift into 4H but comes back either slowly or immediately after I shift back into 2H. Any ideas? Thx. BTW this was my first time changing u-joints so it is possible I did something wrong. The u-joints were articulating smoothly though in all directions after I put them in.

Did you torque the axle nut down properly? I would recheck that... Its possible that you have a defective hub bearing.....does the noise go away if you turn the wheel?

I am not sure the axle nuts are torqued down correctly. A 3/4 drive torque wrench capable of 185 ft-lbs runs about $700 bux. I can run it by a shop and throw them a bit of money to check the torques, i guess. Good thought on the bad hub assembly. I still have the old ones and they seemed fine so presumably I could put them back on one at a time to check and isolate the problem and if the noise persists then that could push me back toward poor torque down of either the hub or axle nut. If you have an O'reillys or an autozone nearby you can rent one from them..just make sure it goes high enough to torque it down....O'reillys should have a 1/2" drive that goes to 250 ftlbs

By the way...What kind of U-joints did you use? Are they greasable? If so, did you grease them before you put them in?

Oh and I could not find a 43mm socket in anything smaller than 3/4 drive so 1/2 torquey won't work for me.

43mm?? I dont think its that big..could be wrong though...I thought it was a 1 11/16....you could always get a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter..

I hate those sealed u-joints..never seem to last...you should be able to get greasable ones from parts plus, napa, or carquest...I believe they all use precision brand u-joints..Spicer would be my choice if you can find them....

43mm is 1.6929 in. 1 11/16 is 1.6875. Pretty sure the 43mm is the right fit but i never tried a 1 11/16. 43mm didnt have any slack though so I am not sure a 1 11/16 would work. Anyway I now own a 43mm socket and 3/4 breaker bar which can double as a weapon if i am not too tired to swing it. I was hoping to get to the truck this w/e but honeydos are taking over.

If you didn't torque your hub nuts properly you will quickly learn that you should have, This shortens thier life exponentially...although I'm not sure if this is your exact issue causing the high pitched sound you hear. You can use a good 1/2 inch drive clicker wrench with a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter. Tractor Supply, Orshliens or a simliar place should have them.

One question, did you remove the front drive shaft or the front U-joint on it from the differential to do this job?

Edit: Other minor things that might cause this (since you didn't mention replacing these) are sticking caliper pins, dirt or stones on the brake pads, brake pad squeak even out of balace tires. I understand that you stated much of this goes away when you shift into 4wd but this places a different load on the front shaft and differential components.
