Question Amp with an auto ohm selection feature?

I bought a Memphis MC1.1100 and ia ssumed i would have to wire my subs down to one ohm. but a guy at a shop said that this amp actually does that automatically. like literally hook the positive to the positive and negative to negative.

Is that true?.... ive never heard of an amp that will do that. haha

He's right and wrong...amps automatically drop their ohm load depending how you wire the subs to the amp...but your amp is still rated at 4ohms= 275x1
2ohms=550x1
1ohm 1100x1
So now it all depends on:
A- what ohm your subs are
B- how you wire them
So in his theory...if you had a 4ohm sub and wired them how he said...you would get 275 watts to that sub. Probably not what you are looking for

I would first check if the amp will do 1 OHM. output without melting the output transistors. I still would not hook it up without knowing what the speakers final OHM. rating is. It is not that hard to figure out and there are many websites with wiring examples and calculators to help you. I personally would also measure the OHM. resistance using a VOM meter.

oh and yeah, i knew they dropped depending on how you wire them, but he said literally hook up one sub to one channel, the next to the other. And it will automatically drop down to 1 ohm and 1100 watts.

Nkw i do know that some amps, jl and rockford cp series come to mind, offer the same rms rating @ 1,2, and 4 ohms...

I'm pretty sure apart from your Walmart amps, all amps will adjust power output based on impedance received.

That doesn't mean all amps will operate optimally under those conditions.

like i know (most times) that if you wire each sub it will be a certain ohm, or you could run them in series or parallel and it will be a different ohm. I know that my amp is 1,2,4 ohm stable, it says it on the back with a little sticker. I thought to get it down to one ohm i would have to crazily wire my subs down to one ohm. The guy at the shop said that i was able to hook one sub to one channel, the other to the other channel and that the amp would recognize that they can take 1 ohm and that the amp will automatically drop down to one ohm. with out me having to go wiring crazy.

The amp may adjust for different OHM. outputs, but the speaker OHM resistance you can't change without wiring correctly.
