I test drove several trucks in different configurations before making my decesion. Going from a 8 speed to a 6 speed with the same rear end I noticed a huge difference in the engine responsiveness. It wasn't that the 8 speed had any more power, it was that the power was there immediately at any speed. The truck didn't build into power band and then wined way down but stayed fairly close to power band.

After that I knew the 8 speed was a requirement.

Go with the 8 speed you will love it. I thought mine shifted weird when I got it but now after 1500 miles I don't even notice it.

The 8 speed is superior in every way (strength, fuel economy, internal design, etc...). But, as others have said, it seems like it takes 1k miles or so before it starts to really smooth out. Given the right throttle, the only way I can tell it is shifting is the tach and the exhaust sound. There is a 'medium' throttle point that is does shift a bit hard though.

Also, when in 8th gear, the downshifts to 7th on the highway are super smooth and practically seamless.

LOL, yeah I know what you mean...but your 'shifter' would be nothing more than a phallic shaped object connected to nothing but wires.

It is annoying to reach for the shift knob without looking but accidently grab the A/C or the radio knob and either get blasted with air or sound.

another ++ for the 8-speed

smooth and shifts awesome, gets better with mileage for sure

keep in mind the 8 is rated for 2 mpg better than the 6 also

The 8 speed is a MUST have! Get the no-spin 3.92 gears and air ride. If u can't find one, order one.

At first when I drove my 8-speed I too thought the shifts were a little abrupt. But like the manual says after a few hundred miles the shifts calibrate themselves and you barely notice the first couple shifts anymore.
