Default Buying a new ram tomorrow

Hi Guys, I currently own a 2009 ram and I am looking to trade it in on a 2013 truck

I am looking at the 2013 sport with the air ride and the 6 speed.

I test drove the 8 speed and found the shifting too much and annoying for me. Do any of you that have the 8 speed find this? Should I take the time to do another test drive and give that tranny another shot?

I also would like to hear if anyone is having issues with their air ride systems? I love the ride and the tow leveling, however I am just a little concerned with its longevity.

Any answers would be appreciated

Thank you for your time guys.

Justin

I love the air ride and the 8 spd. I have towed my travel trailer with no issues. I have found that the 8 spd really doesnt. seem to hunt for gears for me. MPG is great for a 4x4 cc. Getting 17 in the city and 22+ on the highway. I have just shy of 3000 miles on it so far without any issues. The air ride has been sweet. Entry exit mode is handy for hooking up the camper and for the obvious too. Really I have no issues at all. The trucks loaded which usually means more chance for issues but, so far so good. A great truck. I would give another chance on the air ride and 8 spd. if you can. It cant hurt. Just my opinion. Good luck with your purchase!

I have the 8speed too. At first my trasmission was shifting weird too. Mostly when downshifting right before i come to a stop. but after 1000km its gone.
like shifting is as smooth as it can be and you dont even notice the shifts. and the mileage is really good too.
another plus is alot more space since you dont have that big shifter anymore

i dont have air ride suspension tho. didnt really need one.

I just bought an 8 speed on Saturday. I've test driven several trucks. I find the 8 speed to be the smoothest shifting vehicle I have ever driven. It feels a little weird to have the engine RPMs moving so little, but I'm sure I will get used to that.

In the end I decided not to go with the air ride. So, I can't comment on that too much. It wasn't because I worried about it going wrong, but the air ride is really hard to find around here without a Laramie and I really like the Outdoorsman trim. It wasn't something that mattered enough to me to wait over.

I don't have any problems with the shifting but I am slightly (and I mean slightly) disappointed with the passing abilities at highway speeds. It just doesn't seem to be as good as my 11 outdoorsman. It has improved after a couple 1000 miles though.
I don't have a ton of miles on but I haven't had any problems with air ride and I am really happy that I got it. I did opt for the extended warranty because of it and all the electronics in this truck. Also, hopefully I'll be keeping this truck for a while.

I will also add a for the 8 speed transmission. It is very smooth. I have 1100 miles on my truck, so the sample size is small.

I would suggest that you drive a different truck with the 8 speed. Drive one with the rear axle ration that you will be getting on the truck you buy, if possible.

The eight speed transmission needs drive time to calibrate its shifting so a test drive on a new vehicle is going to be miss-leading.

From page 355 of the owners' manual:

"The electronically-controlled transmission provides a
precise shift schedule. The transmission electronics are
self-calibrating; therefore, the first few shifts on a new
vehicle may be somewhat abrupt. This is a normal
condition, and precision shifts will develop within a few
hundred miles (kilometers)."

This is all great info guys. I am going to go and take another 8 speed out for a drive today. I'll see if I like it any better. I seem to be the only one that I can find on the internet that doesn't seem to like it.

I drove an 8 speed for a while, honestly a 5.7 V8 really doesnt need an 8 speed for anything unless you stick with the 3.21 and you can use the ratio spread to your advantage and maybe eek out some better highway fuel mileage. The one I drove shifted very nicely, both up and down, it was a demo with 5000 miles on it so it had a few miles.

The 8 speed is more efficient and uses less power to turn and is a solid design, I was originally going to get an 8 speed just because it was different then the 5/6 speed in my 2010 and 2012 but I never had any trans issues in either of them. They both towed their max ratings, got acceptable gas mileage for a large pickup and drove just fine to me so the 8 speed wouldnt be a deal breaker for me.

It was more of picking a truck that was local and in stock so I had to compromise some things, if I was to order one I would have ordered the exact truck I have but I would have bought the 8 speed.
