Default Towing with Hemi / 8spd / 3.21 - Revised figures?

Some potentially good news for those with the 3.21 rear ends with the 8spd! My dealer just got the spec sheets for the 2014's and it seems the tow ratings have increased pretty significantly over 2013's with the same powertrain. Crew cab 4x4's are now rated at 7950lbs.

My dealer explained that for 2013 Ram just used the same ratings for the 8spd as they did with the old 6spd, regardless of rear end choice. Apparently now they are rated as seen here. The increase is attributed to the park mechanisms and the gearing benefit of the 8spd.

I hope you know that the rating on the '13s doesn't change just because the '14s got an increase... Ram would have to officially revise the '13 rating for it to change.

On the parking mech... Not sure on the Hemi, but the parking pawl was strengthened on the V6 w/ 8speed for the 14MY. That little thing allowed the V6 to get a jump in the tow rating...

So what are you towing that concerns you? Also, those numbers are 'targets'. Without suggesting anything, I have spent years towing far more than my trucks were rated for. As long as you balance your load properly, drive sensibly and don't abuse the iron, it will work reliably for you. I always used a weight distribution set up as well take load off the hitch. If you ever encounter a trailer that doesn't track well, just add a sway control. But you probably know all about these systems.

I was sharing because all the info I read previously showed that the 8spd/3.21 was only rated in the 6500lb range (+\- depending on trim level and configuration of course). I thought this would be good info for the community.

That would have been nice to know before I ordered my truck...

btw - towing more than what's rated tends to void your warranty. I live in a very small town. My dealer would know.

Thanks for posting. My salesman actually didn't lie to me. When I purchased my '14 Crew Cab Laramie with 3.21s a few weeks ago he told me it was going to be re-rated and he expected it to be close to 8k lbs.

Glad to see that's going to be the case. I had thought about exchanging mine for 3.92 gears, but after driving it a week, I'm satisfied with the 3.21 axle. While I do have a boat that pushes 7k on the trailer, I haven't towed it with the truck yet as it is in a slip for the summer. I'll be pulling it out and taking it to the dealer in a week or two for some warranty work and to be winterized. That will be 160 miles each way, so I'll get a good idea how she tows.

I honestly can't stand 3.21 gears. I don't tow anything to often that pushes or comes close to the posted limits but I just don't like being that close.

Granted I only have experience with 3.55 and 3.92 on the old 6 speed transmissions. With those two I would take 3.92 any day... the driving/towing experience is much better IMO.

I was at the dealer yesterday looking at a 14 Laramie with 8 Speed/3.21 and it has a max tow of 6400 pounds. Even with this revised tow rating I would rather have more than be close.

Towing a 6,500lb to 7k open bow boat is lot different than towing a box trailer or camper of similar weight. Much less frontal area and usually a lot less tongue weight with a boat. The '07 Expedition with a 5.4 3v Trition/6 speed and 3.73 gears which I traded in on the Ram, towed my boat fine and went a relatively trouble free 130k miles.

Looking at gear ratios, my Ram with 3.21/8 speed is not far off from my Expedition and considering the Ram is lighter, has nearly 100 more hp and 40 more ft-lbs of torque. I'm not worried about it one bit. The Expedition could pull the boat at 70 mph in 6th gear at 2k rpm on level ground, only down shifting on any type of grade. Obviously I won't pull in 8th, but 6th or 7th shouldn't be much of an issue in the flat lands of Illinois.

Plus now that I keep the boat on a lift, I don't tow it much anymore.

I was curious to see if they had strengthened the parking prawl on the 8 speed hemi combo as well. Or maybe this will be like when they revised the tow/haul ratings between the '09 and '10 models, nothing changed, they had just underrated the trucks in the first year to be conservative.
