Default '88 longbox...concensus

hey guys...
eyeballing a '88 Ram longbox...wondering what people's general thoughts are on this early Gen..
easy to lower? it's rwd only. OR are the parts easily locatable to up it to a 4x4 and reach for the clouds?
unsure of engine at present, but were there some big boy options available? i'm guessing it's prob an inline 6, but did that yr come with a 318 or 360??

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they could come with a 318 and maybe a 360 also. This would have been the pre-magnum days so the power wasn't great but O.K. From that vintage I don't think they were still using the slant six, but I'm not sure.

I've never really searched for that vintage of truck in junkyards but I'd think they would be fairly easy to find. You could probably pick up a junk one with all the 4wd stuff cheap.

from the pics the body looks really decent, minus the tail gate..so i think you'd be on the money, a mechanical donor shouldn't be too hard to come across

I had an '87 2wd long box about 5 years ago 318 motor. 300, miles on the org. Motor and tranny. I had low compression on 3 cyl. And it still ran strong (enough lol) the frame snapped behind the steering gear box. I welded it up and boxed it in with 1/4 plate to keep it on the road. The brake proportioning valve went and I was unable to locate another so thats what did it in....

I think 1988 is when they switched from carb. To fuel injection

In the truck world, the 80's Dodge was waaaaay back in the shadows of Chevy and Ford. It wasn't flashy. It wasn't cool. It didn't sell in big numbers. It was ignored by nearly every aftermarket group, though Walker Evans spent the 80's stomping the bat-snot out of the competition in his offroad Dodge truck. Still, most of what was offered was most likely found via Mopar Performance, and it wasn't much. The engine parts were abundant, but they were rapidly becoming illegal for street use. 1988 was the first year for Throttle Body Fuel Injection units for the 3.9 V6 and 318 V8. The 360 had the Rochester Quadrajet for '88, going to TBI for '89. The trucks changed little through the years so a donor shouldn't be too hard to find even now. They are anvil tough.

I wish I had my old 66 with a 318 in it (indestructible). I just had a gentleman with an 87 4wd that originally had a 318 in it, drop a replacement 360 in her, wanting to trade on a diesel. I'd have probably entertained it more with the original 318 in it. R...
