Default U connect Info needed

Well the more I read on here the more I hear about u connect, apps on the screen itself, an app fpr my iphone to do different things, when I bought my truck 3 weeks ago, nothing was really explained about what uconnect is or means, the salesmen went through every feature on the 8.4" screen but didnt say a word about possible apps, I have also heard that you have to pay for u connect??? If someone could please explain to me what u connect means, what it actually does and how to get a the smart phone app that would be great, I was on the drive uconnect website but it is too complicated and seems to tell me the same type of info over and over no matter what I click on. I have the 8.4 AN

Thanks, Dan

I can't tell you much about the 2013-2014 Ram radios

the 8.4 AN is also called the RA4
it comes with Navigation already installed, about 3 or 4 years from now, you may want to update your maps, doing it before then is a waste of $178

So far the APPS are not really available & after the Trial period they will be charging $20 a month for them
Sorry to say, i don't think that they will be available up in Canada, at least until SPRINT makes some kind of deal with the Canadian phone companies

UCONNECT is just another simple way of saying BLUETOOTH
GM uses ONSTAR
FORD uses SYNC
they are all basically the same thing

You may have to sign up for Uconnect
check out this site
http://www.driveuconnect.com/support/ramtrucks/

someone from Canada will give you more information

Your own Smart Phone likely has APPS available & don't be surprised if they work better then the APPS through Ram trucks

There are certain features on the 8.4 radios that will eventually start costing money once the free trial subscription runs out (I thought it was a 6 month trial but it has been longer than that for me). These features are part of the Advantage Package and include:

- 911 Call
- Remote vehicle start
- Care assist call
- Remote door lock
- Cancel remote start
- Remote door unlock
- Voice texting (depending on if your phone supports it)
- Remote horn & lights
- Roadside assistance call
- Stolen vehicle assistance
- Theft alarm notification
- Yelp

Then there is another group of apps called Via Mobile. These will be music apps such as Pandora, IHeartRadio, and Slacker Radio. Nobody really knows what all they will do because they have been "coming soon" since the 2013s came out. Now there are 2014s on the lot so nobody is holding their breath. You can still use those apps on your smartphone and stream the audio to the radio so I'm guessing that once the apps are enabled on the 8.4 they will just provide some upgraded functionality and maybe voice commands (but that is just speculation on my part).

As far as the Uconnect app for your phone it depends on what smartphone you have. If you have an iPhone just do a search for Uconnect in the App Store. I don't have an Android so can't speak to that but I imagine their App Store works much the same way. The Uconnect smartphone app just allows you start and stop the engine, lock and unlock the doors, and activate the panic alarm from anywhere you have Internet service (and the vehicle is getting cellular reception). It is handy for starting your car before walking out of the office and heating/cooling the car. It isn't instantaneous like using your key fob, though. There is a 2-3 minute lag but at least the range is nearly unlimited. I have found the cellular reception of the truck in a parking garage is pretty weak and often fails to start. The annoying thing is that it sends me an email every time I use the app to do something. I don't mind it emailing and saying that it couldn't start the truck for some reason but if it is working just fine then why bother sending me email just to say so? In one of the last upgrades to the app they also included a motion sensor. If you are driving (or even walking briskly) you can't use the smartphone app. Don't know what genius came up with that...probably a lawyer. It is aggravating when someone is driving you to your car and you have to hope there is a stoplight on the way so you catch a red light just to start the truck before you get there. When it is triple digits outside it is desirable to let the truck cool off. Even on my white Ram it feels like stepping into an oven on a Texas summer day.

Edit: After typing this I realized you are in Canada. Never mind...Chrysler seems to think you guys haven't yet mastered the art of cellular service yet.

Uconnect has nothing to do with bluetooth, bluetooth is bluetooth and thats part of the basic hardware. Bluetooth will work with no uconnect subscription of any kind.

Uconnect access/apps/911/assist/whatever is its own 3G cell phone hardware, edge 35 described what that offers and thats a paid subscription service like onstar.

Uconnect access free trial is 6 months for 8.4A radios and 1 year for factory 8.4AN radios.

And also, dont feel bad about the dealer not showing you anything, especially if the Uconnect services are not available in Canada. The dealer I bought mine from in the US had no idea what any of it was about, he thought it worked like Ford's Sync where it uses your own cell phone to call 911 in a crash.

Remember my rant the other day in off topic about how it sometimes sucks to be a Canuck....well add this to the list! Once again due to some stupid reason we cannot get the uconnect internet service or the app load.

ya that's farkin stupid...

i can open and close my garage door from my iphone, and turn on and off lights in my garage or house...but can't do it from my truck
i can do all this thru an app called MyQ supplied and hosted free by liftmaster

me thinx a third party could do a lot between the Uconnect (linked to phone by bluetooth) and your regular service be it rogers or bell

I have always said Uconnect is an awesome concept but it is like a bad game of telephone. The designer tells the software people who tell the hardware people who tell the radio people who tell the truck systems people and now we have an app that honks the horn. Great! Just what I always wanted.

Are we going to have to pay this 20 monthly fee just to use the Pandora portion of the uConnect? I think it is absolute bullshit that my 6mo. trial is almost up and still dont have the media apps we were promised to be "coming soon". Our trials should start over when these features we were told we would have when we bought our trucks, are released. I will not give them a dime of my money unless that happens...

I agree. I won't be subscribing. The fact that its tied into Sprint is bad enough. No apps is reason to give us an extra three months free.
