Default Engine runs rough (chokes) at low speeds while trying to maintain ECO light "on"

I just purchased a 2011 Dodge Laramie with 5.7 litre Hemi with MDS. Problem I seem to notice is at lower speeds while just a slight press on gas pedal engine seems to be slightly choking as I try to maintain the "ECO" light on (4 cylinder mode?) If I press accelerator a bit more thus turning off the "ECO" light, engine then runs smooth. While ECO light is on and engine running rough I can also see RPM's changing up & down slightly matching the rough idling I'm feeling. Is this rough engine running normal, and just a symptom of a big truck running on 4 cylinders (and underpowered), or is this something I need to take back to dealer to have checked? Has anyone else out there having this issue? Other than this, truck runs great....I love my truck!!

mine has a slight delay and stutter when switching from eco to v8. seems pretty normal. my diablosport predator made it smoother now though. maybe something u want to look into.

There is however a technical service bulletin for this problem and here it is:
Engine Controls - Poor Idle Quality NUMBER: 18-038-08
GROUP: Vehicle Performance
DATE: October22, 2008
THE StarSCAN(R) FLASH FILES FOR THIS BULLETIN MUST BE RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET.
StarSCAN(R) SOFTWARE LEVEL MUST BE AT RELEASE 9.03 OR HIGHER FOR THIS BULLETIN.
StarMOBILE STANDALONE MODE OR StarMOBILE DESKTOP CLIENT MAY ALSO BE USED TO PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE.
SUBJECT:
Flash: Idle Quality Improvements
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software.
MODELS:
2009 (DS) Ram 1500 Truck
NOTE : This bulletin applies to two wheel drive (4x2) models equipped with a 5.7L engine (sales code EZD) built before October 3, 2008 (MDH 1003XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may complain of the idle quaility after the vehicle is warmed up. This condition can happen while the vehicle is in park, neutral, drive or reverse with no additional throttle tip in. A software change has been made to the increase the warm nominal idle speed from 584 rpm to 648 rpm, which corrects the condition.
If the vehicle owner complains of this issue reprogram the PCM with the new software.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (StarSCAN(R)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTC's are present record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.

PARTS REQUIRED:

SPECIAL TOOLS / EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE - USING THE INTERNET TO RETRIEVE THE FLASH FILE:
1.Reprogram the PCM with the latest software. Follow the detailed service procedures available in DeaIerCONNECT/TECHCONNECT, Refer To 8 - Electrical/Electronic Control Modules/Powertrain Control Module - Standard Procedure PCM/ECM Programming - Gas.
2.Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n 04275086AB and attach it near the VECI label.
POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.

TIME ALLOWANCE:

So it looks like if you mention it to the dealer they should correct it! hope this helps!

Thanks for the info......idling is not an issue, idles fine, and actually runs fine too.....except when I'm just say cruising on a city street (no lights for a good stretch) and trying to maintain like 25/30 miles an hour. I feel the engine kind of running a wee bit rough...like its starving for gas slightly. The recall you mention states its for engines pre October 2008. Don't believe thats the case here, but thanks again. I guess I'll stop by the dealer and run it past them too. Afterall thats what warranties are for, right? Take care!

since it is in MDS or ECO mode, it isn't putting out the power you need to accelerate smoothly from low speed. Basically, you are "lugging" the engine. Shift out of O/D and it will drive a lot better at lower speeds.

I have similar issue with mine. Runs great accept at that lower speed, although 5 speed automatic tranny seems to maybe hunt a little bit as well, i think adding to the issue.

In town my Ram runs the same way, when it starts to happen, i just drop it out of 5th OD, this keeps the MDS inactive
Mine runs really rough & the exhaust makes a very strange noise when it happens, noise is somewhere between passing gas & a bubbling jacuzzi
