Default Removing the Spare Tire

A word of caution if you haven't had to remove the spare tire yet. You might want to practice doing so before you get a flat out in the middle of nowhere and can't figure out how to remove the spare.

Today I got a flat on my new 2013 RAM 1500. Normally, I would just change the thing myself but instead, ran into a problem in that I couldn't figure out how to lower the spare. I ended up calling Roadside Assistance. The tow truck driver arrived an hour and a half later and showed me how to do it.

The problem I had was due to the description on page 140 of the User Guide. It is inaccurate and omits important steps. For removing the spare tire, it states only to insert the extension tube and rotate it counterclockwise. What the User Guide doesn't mention is which end of the extension tube must be inserted and the angle of insertion.

I was lucky that I was not in a remote or hostile environment. As I said early, you might want to familiarize yourself with the procedure beforehand. It's not difficult but not easy to figure out when your in an emergency.

I have usually tried at least lowering & raising the spare tire on all of my vehicles
it would really be a hassle out in the desert at night & getting a flat

i also have 2 flashlights & 2 types of road flares in my Ram at all times
the burning kind & the GLOW Flares

Also, when you perform this in your driveway to learn how its done, get a can of lithium grease and once lowered, spray some of that grease into the hole where the cable mechanism is, also spray the cable itself, you will thank yourself for doing it in a few years when you lower it again and its not rusted and all jammed up that it will not come down.

Had to lower mine on Saturday, because I was installing a compressor for the air bags above where the spare goes.

Did take me a minute to figure it out - had to get a flashlight in the hole above the bumper, then I saw the cone/funnel where the handle needed to go.

My much bigger issue, is that the threads in the weld nut on the floor under the passenger seat for the jack and handle hold down were boogered. The hold down bolt was super stiff to remove, then didn't want to start back in the threads when I tried stowing the jack and handle after I was finished. I was able to chase the threads from underneath just using the hold down bolt, then it threaded in easily from the top as it should.

I mention it because, if mine was boogered from the factory, someone else's may be too. And having the hold down bolt not functional on a new truck would suck. So, if you go to put one back and it doesn't want to thread in easily, remember to try running the bolt in from underneath to chase the threads.
