Thumbs up towing trailer v6 8 speed

Traded my 1999 sport for a 2013 tradesman v6 last week. So far, nice truck. According to the dash i have been getting 18 to 21 mpg. Not bad. Towing an open trailer with a dune buggy, about 2000 pounds total first time. Truck really seemed to labor. Mileage down to 14 then up to 15. Seems to shake a lot unless the road is glass smooth. BTW trailer new last fall. 14 foot aluminum. Is there a learn period for the trans? I really like the truck. A little concerned about towing.
Thanks,
Tom in Michigan

Congrats on the new truck!
I didn't tow anything with mine for the first 3,000 miles, mainly because I bought it in November and the boat was put away at that time, but I never heard anything about not towing for any sort of break in period.
I see the Caravans with the Pentastar towing travel trailers, so I'm sure your RAM should have no problem with our Dune Buggy.

Keep in mind, this is a revvy engine, so when towing a trailer, it's going to want to downshift and it'll labor at slower speeds. it'll also lose quite a bit of mileage because even though it has power, it's still a small engine; the power is higher in the RPMs and it's going to struggle with the load at ~2,000 rpm. Anything in the teens while towing is good! LOL

As a reference from my experience:

I had a 4cyl Kia Sportage, I towed a small camper with it everywhere, at first seeing the RPMs in the 4k range (up hills) scared the crap out of me, but it did it. Also the mileage would go from 24mpg normal, to 18 towing, and that was a 1500lb trailer...

What gear ratio do you have? I have 3.55 and my V6 8 speed towed a 20 foot boat no problems, boat and trailer was likely around 3000 pounds. I used tow mode and it shifted different but didn't struggle at all.

My pentastar ram tows as good as my old 4.7 did. Are you using the tow/haul button? RPMS are higher and it holds gears longer. I tow a 3000 pound boat 120 miles to the lake and back with no issues. The rear end of the truck is a little more bouncy with the coil springs in my opinion but stiffer shocks might help. No Hemi needed for that load.

Default tow/haul

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I make it a point to turn on tow/haul mode. My friend has a crew cab 2012 with a 4.7 Not the same, I know. I am going to ask him to tow the trailer tomorrow and see if the trailer is a shaking or if it is in the truck. I have towed the trailer with my '99 and a suburban and did not notice any difference. I got the v6 because my new job has me commuting 50 miles a day. Need the better mileage. I hope there is somthing I can do with the 2013 truck or the trailer to fix this shaking.

50miles a day is nothing! My daily commute is 135miles.. 67.5miles each way... Yeah, it sux!!

If the trailer seems bouncy, try adding a bit more tongue weight and see if that helps...

for the last ten years i lived less than 2 miles from work. 50 miles a day is a BIG change. Hope the new truck makes it ten more.

Took truck is, dealer balanced tires.. Still shaking. Took it back today to get road force checked. In my opinion, it is not a tire problem bud a shimmy shake like the body is vibrating separate from the frame or the track bar is missing. Got a minivan rent a car and it does not shake. Hit a bump and body bumps one time. On my truck if you hit a bump, body shakes 4-5 times. I really feel this is a design flaw. I put 130,000 miles on my '99 ram and 140,000 miles on my '03 Suburban in the last 14 years. I never had a shaking or vibration with either of those.
Am I the only one having this problem?
Thanks,
Tom
