I've had the 5 speed Hemi (not much different than the 6) with 3.55's and thought performance was disappointing. Now with the 8spd and 3.92's it's a different world. I also like that the 8 speed isn't a native Chrysler product and a proven entity in many other vehicles....(although I'm not sure where the 6 speed came from to be honest.)

Maybe they have tons of the old transmission and are figuring out how to get rid of them.

Was actually a pretty good strategy at first. When they unveiled the 2013s they talked and talked about the 8 speed and active grill shutters and made it seem like it would be the only transmission that the truck that came with. A lot of people flocked to the dealers thinking that they were going to get it but then found out that it wouldn't even be available until oinths later. But, as any good car salesman will tell you, once the potential customer is actually in the dealership then most of the work is done.

Off the top of my head I can't remember reading any of the early 2013 info that said the 8 speed would be optional. It seems like it all said something to the effect of "New for 2013" but omitted "optional" or "late/limited availability". In my case it wouldn't have made a difference because when I needed a new truck I needed a new truck and didn't have time to wait for the new transmission to come out. My choice was between the rather aging Ford and Chevy models or the Ram. As much I as I prefer the performance of the Ecoboost it all came down to the interior where the Ram beats the pants off the others.

It is a Chrysler product.

In the late 90s they came out with the 45RFE 4 speed. It technically had 5 speeds but since most of the time it didn't use them they labeled it as a 4 speed. They then added another gear, made a few minor tweaks, and then it was the 545RFE. Once again they did the right thing and called it a 5 speed even though it technically now had 6 forward gears.

Take that 5 speed, make a software change, and relabel it a 6 speed. Now you have something new to advertise for the 2012 model year to help clear out inventory before the 2013s arrive.

Did you have the dealer conduct a regional dealer search for exactly what you want? Could be your favorite is out there somewhere, just sitting on another dealers lot. Mine came from a state away with a few hundred miles on the odometer by the time I drove it home. If your dealer won't do that, try another one. I might guess the stock of 13's is getting lower now but you never know unless someone makes the effort to look.

And no active grill shutters without the 8 speed if that's important to you.

Having said that, though, let me also add that I've had no problems with my transmission and perhaps there is something to be said for lower tech and less equipment to break (not an issue when you are under warranty, though)
Edge35; You and I must be the one percent that uses our ERS every single start up. And that's a no shizzer bud.

I was in the "not going to settle" crowd when it came to purchasing my truck. I'm hoping my truck will give me a good 10-15 years, so I wanted to make sure I had no regrets prior to making the final decision. I guess it all depends on how high up the 8 speed transmission is on your priority list. From reading your post, it seems pretty important to you. It was for me, as well. After test driving both, it was 8 speed or nothing for me. Unfortunately, the 8 speeds were just being built and I couldn't find the truck I wanted within 2000 miles. So, I had to order mine (and probably get less off at the dealership).

The 8 speed being a ZF transmission is what sold me on it. I've had ZF transmissions before, and they are rock solid. Coupled with its performance and fuel economy there's just no way I would have settled for a 6 speed Chrysler transmission unless I had no choice.

Your probably spending around $40,000 anyway, so why settle with an inferior transmission to save a measly 2 or 3 g's (I'm assuming).

Aw come on guys, plenty of guys with well over 70000 miles on here getting no troubles from the 545/65RFE. The only ones really having problems are the guys consistently doing burnouts and the boosted Hemis. Normal everyday usage is perfectly fine. But if I could have waited, Most definitely I would have wanted the ZF-8speed. But why add another bill when I'm all paid off with my 2012, Clear title in hand? I will wait for either the EcoDiesel to get its quirks out or completely go off the reservation and try out the rumored 5.0L Cummins in a Titan. Sorry for the thread jack gents.
