Default engine died

I was sitting in the drive thru and turned the fan for the a.c. on the engine died. Tried to start and nothing not even a click. Had it towed home and took the ignition switch off the column and used a screw driver to push the piece over and it clicked bit sounded like the battery was dead. I hooked cable's up and it will turn over and it takes forever to start. I have to stay on the gas and it runs like crap. There's an awful noise coming from the engine. Any ideas?

Sounds like the AC compressor locked up.

Too much drag won't let the engine spin to start, adds drag so it won't start,or run and the belt is probably screaming and smoking.

Take the belt off the AC compressor and see if it spins. You will have to replace it or bypass it with a smaller belt.

It didn't have a belt for the a.c when I got it. What's the best way to check the timing belt? Should I take the cover off?

So what you're saying is that there is no belt on the AC compressor and you turned on the AC and the truck died...is that correct so far?

It doesn't have a timing belt it has a chain. If you're going to attempt to check it, you'll have to pull the cover.

I did some research online and it looks like a pretty good job.

Bring up #1 piston to TDC (Top Dead Center). Check the timing mark on the crank to make sure it's on TDC. (Drivers side front of the engine down by the crank pulley/harmonic balancer. Find #1 cylinder on the dist cap and mark it on the dist (White out, grease pencil, whatever) Pull the Dist cap off and let us know where the rotor is pointing. Should save you some trouble.

I'd still suggest taking the belts off the front of the engine and try starting it before you do any type of tear down.

Once again...
So what you're saying is that there is no belt on the AC compressor and you turned on the AC and the truck died...is that correct so far?

Now, I COULD try to guess, but it'd make things much easier if it were a question and answer topic.

Yeah I turned the fan on and didn't realized a.c. button was pushed in. The compressor doesn't have a belted. As soon as I turned it on the engine died.

Well, that points to another direction. I was thinking the sudden increased load of the compressor might've been the last straw for an old timing set, causing it to jump (they will start and run badly with jumped timing if it's not more than a tooth or two), but now I'm wondering if when the fan switch was activated, some vacuum-operated air directing door or hose connected to the system is now leaking. That or some sort of short associated with the fan is killing available power and ignition is suffering.

Did it just happen the one time? Did it cut back on right away?
