Winter tires are made of a different rubber. They are rock hard at colder temps and turn softer when it gets warmer. Those symbols are there so you know to take them off in warmer temps.

I have had the BFGs on an older truck. Never had any issues with them.

I haven't run them personally but I've heard that both the Toyo AT2's and the Nitto Terra Grapplers perform well in the snow. The BFG ATs would also be a good choice.

10' RCSB 4x4 305/50R20 Terra Grapplers on my stock 20" Chrome Clads

Tires measure 12.2" wide x 32.2" tall, no spacers, no rubbing, no problem

...and the truck is even lowered, Ground Force 2/3 drop kit

Alberta Winter driven 3.5 years and going strong... AWESOME Winter tire, and will buying another new set soon

How many miles did you get out of those Terra Grapplers?

Not really relevant compared to "most" drivers, but I'm at about 40k (kms)
and could probably get one more year out of them if I tried to push it.
But I want fresh tires for this Winter.

Because I drive the Bag off it daily, my wear is a lot worse than most people.
ALL city driving and even race them at the track occasionally.
My average fuel economy is about 10mpg and 500WHP means no tire will last long under that kind of abuse.

I also take corners like Mario Andretti with my drop kit that has progressive coils on all 4 corners.

I will say that I have had a Lot of different tires, on many different 4x4's over the 35 year span I've been driving Northern Canadian roads with 6 or 7 months of Winter.

Before these, Good Year MT-R's were my favorite (35"x12.5's on my Jeep)

The Terra Grappler's are the best all around four season tire I've had,
and even though it will cost me $1600 a set in Canada,
They are well worth it, even if I tend to burn through a set in 3.5-4 years.

I still think it's crazy that you fit that tire on the stock rim BlackRamHemi. Definitely looks good and awesome that it works for you. It's weird how these trucks are built different enough that you can run a 305 wide tire while most can only go 285 wide. I wonder if you're lowering kit has something to do with it? Maybe changing the geometry it it all gave you more clearance.

I actually mounted the tires long before the drop was installed (pre-drop photo)

Upper control arm clearance ...

You cant rely on a number stamped on a side wall, you actually need to visit
the manufacturers website for each tires exact spec and for mounted width/height on recommended sized rim.

a 305/50R20 Terra Grappler on a 9" wheel measures 12.2" wide x 32.2" tall
a 305/55R20 Terra Grappler is 12.4" x 33.19" and might rub
an LT295/60R20 is 12.36" x 34.45"

Here's where it gets even more interesting:

Go to Nitto's website and see for yourself the Terra and Trail Grapplers are not consistent either

a 295/65R20 Trail Grappler is even wider than a 305 Terra at 12.52" wide x 32.91" tall

the 305/55R20 Trial Grappler is 12.60" wide x 33.39" tall

It's best to go to a site like Tire Rack for specs and comparisons
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSe...50&diameter=20

With a Stock 20" x 9" wheel with +19.02" offset,
12.2" wide is just about the max for a 4x4 1500 .

an 8" wheel can get away with a bit more , it narrows the tire and the distance from the UCA is 1/4" more

I made a similar post a few days ago: http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=151650

Ya that definitely puts a bit of a screw in to things when looking for tires or recommending sizes to other members. That's good information to keep in mind though. As you said Tire Rack is a good site to use to compare sizes and well. I've used it with a few other ones and it definitely helps you get a better understanding of exactly what's going on.

Great post by the way!

winter is the main reason i moved to San Diego

things have changed a lot in the last decade, as far as winter tires go

we used to have 2 sets of wheels & tires, just like we had 2 vehicles, a good car & a beater

in the winter we put on steel rims & ran a good set of RETREADs
now there is a company called Treadwright, when i drove in the winter, we bought retreads though the Farmers Co-op

https://www.treadwright.com/
seems to be a good company
