Default 4.7L smokes on startup

Hi all,

I've had a 2009 4.7L for just over 2 years. 2 weekends ago I pulled a trailer with a light wooden boat on it 2 and half hours one way, 2 and a half back. The next day I drive it to work. When I crank it up to leave work that evening I get this cloud of light blue smoke. I don't mean a poof, but a cloud! It did this about 4 more times through the week, not everytime I cranked it, but usually after the 40 minute ride to work and after it sat for about 4 hours. I checked the oil level the next weekend and it was just below the "add" line! That's with only 4000 miles since last oil change. I added about 2 quarts to get it where it needed to be. It's at a local dealership now, since yesterday. I called them this morning and they say "they're trying to reproduce the problem". I explained it has to be burning oil because it's not leaking it and the smoking is a dead giveaway (note at this point its really just a small cloud and random at that). After explaining the 2 quart loss of oil the guy tells me that's normal! I kinda lost it on him and told him they needed to get someone to do a compression test on each cylinder. He said they would, but I really wonder what they'll do if anything. I even had an extended warranty through LDS. Anyone have any suggestions?

May not be identified in a compression test. I know the early 80's chevy smallblocks had an issue with valve seals that we used to call the 'Chevy Blues'. When sitting, the valve seals would allow oil to seep down the valve stems, and so when first starting up that bit of oil would get into the cylinders and blow blue smoke at startup.

I don't know if the 4.7 is prone to this problem, but it's something I would get them to check.

Blue smoke on start up is most likely valve seals. It has to sit for a while for the oil to build up in the cylinder. And when a valve seal is bad, it will constantly burn just a little bit of oil all the time.
