Default Reverse not always engaging???

New one for me.

2013 Express CC. About 3000 miles on it.noticed the past week or so that when I engage Reverse, dash will display R but truck in neutral. I have to shift to neutral then back to Reverse which will then engage Reverse. Doesn't happen every time so I only assume dealer will not do anything. Anyone else? Anything I can look at before taking it in?

Thanks.

Same year/model. I've had it happen a couple times. Didn't think too much of it; sort of assumed it might have something to do with the fact that I park on an incline.

Not sure if this is applicable for you guys, but if the truck is moving AT ALL, it won't shift into gear and stays in N. Had this happen to me a few times and now make sure to come to a complete stand still before shifting.

Ibram81, do you have the 6-speed trans? You might have your dealer check the shift linkage adjustment. You might have some misadjustment and/or slop in the linkage (like shift lever loose on the transmission shaft that it operates).

The dash will often display "R" if you are in between Park and Reverse (or Neutral and Reverse), even if the manual valve isn't quite far enough into the Reverse position to allow engagement. That's because, if you're in between two gear positions, the lever could theoretically get nudged or bumped into gear (or into P or N), and we don't want to display "N" (making you think you're safely in Neutral) if a slight nudge might suddenly put you in gear.

So tell your dealer what's going on, and ask them to check the adjustment.

If you have the 8-speed, then as bowieknife noted, the trans will not engage if you are rolling above a certain speed (5 mph I think). In this case, I believe the telltale on the shifter should blink.

what do you mean complaints regarding the speed?

I have read nothing but good things about the 8...

There is no way I would have even bought this truck with a Chrysler slushbox 6, but that's just my opinion.

Have read lots of complaints regarding the 8 speed on the internet, My dealer has already had 3 or 4 trucks this year with 8 speeds that no longer shift because the shifter knob electronics were defective, The reason i went with the 6 speed was because there was no way in hell that the 8 speed could pull my travel trailer the limits are lower. My neighbour just recently bought an 8 speed and regrets it also.

Most of the dealers in the Toronto, Ontario Northern areas will only stock 6 speeds i know this because my truck had to be dealer traded because i only wanted the 6 speed.

My dealer tried to convince me about the 8 speed and even let me bring my trailer to the lot and try pulling it with a brand new 8 speed needless to say it did not work out.

The Towing Specs sheet available on the Ram Trucks website show the GVW and GCVW ratings are identical for the 6-speed vs 8-speed transmission, and actually the max trailer weight ratings are slightly higher for the 8-speed.

how heavy is the trailer?

just curious as this is the first I have read about the 8 not being liked. I love mine and it's one of the biggest reasons I bought the truck.

The main thing that's limits the truck is the rear axle choice.

interesting

I didn't think the 6 speed was rated higher than the 8. Are you sure about that? From what I have read I thought it was the other way around and the 8 was rated higher for torque...

That's what I thought, not mention the MPG is better as well
