Default Installed DRLs on my truck

I tried to get my dealer to turn on my DRLs in the BCM, but they kept insisting it couldn't be done. I looked around for a while and picked up Sylvania LEDriving PX lights and installed them today. They auto-dim to 50% when the parking lights come on which is nice so they comply with silly Oregon laws about driving lights.

Pulled the bottom plastic trim out of the bumper and attached the brackets that hold the lights. It came with some cut-outs so I could line them up on each side. Used my drill press so make sure I drilled through at a 90 degree angle.

Having the truck up on ramps allowed me to sit almost upright under the front end which was nice so I didn't have to lay on my back and kill my neck. There is a surprising amount of room in the front end of these trucks.

Popped it back in which was harder than taking it out since it's a snug fit. The tabs all have to line up before you can fasten any of them.

Ran the wires through, but didn't snap the lights into place until the end to make sure it all worked. Getting the lights out of the brackets is difficult.

Ran the wires along existing wires and loosely zip-tied them. I tightened them all up at the end.

Ran the wires up behind the left front headlight, careful to keep them away from anything that generates heat.

Put the controller module just behind the battery. I used a zip tie and the double sided tape that came with it. Tested for hood closure before I used the tape to make sure it wasn't making any contact when shut.

Hooked up the connectors to the negative and positive terminals.

The last part was to use the wire crimper so the controller module could detect when the headlights came on. I was going to tap into one of these wires, but my meter couldn't get in far enough to detect any voltage.

I ended up taking the front grill off, then the front left headlight. I tapped into the parking light after verifying which wire lit up at 12v. This was tricky as I was doing this part without any directions. At least now I know how to change bulbs for when they burn out. The lights are just resting against the brackets on the bumper in the photo below, that's why they look crooked.

Put everything back together, didn't have any spare parts left over! The lights are 100% when the rest of the lights are off.

And dim to 50% when the parking or headlights come on.

Not bad for $75 and about 2 hours of my time.

Very nice job
good write up & pix

when will Chrysler catch up with GM & start putting DRLs on their vehicles
more & more States have SAFETY ZONES, where headlights or DRLs are required

they have a DRL law in Canada,
Chrysler ought to give us DRLs & the option to have them on or off

my only ticket that i have had with my Ram, is because i didn't have lights on in a Safety Zone

Which parking light wire did you tap into for the dim function? I was going to skip this part until I get pulled over which I doubt would happen.

I tapped into the left front parking light. There are 3 wires: 1 ground, 1 parking, 1 turn signal. The middle one is parking (white and green stripes).

GT,

Careful what you wish for. Us Canadians have a helluva time with DRL's and lighting mods. I love the idea of having them but there needs to be flexibility in activation/deactivation.

As it stands now, a Canadian truck (2012) cannot be deactivated by the dealer and it has nothing to do with "law".

I wanted HID's, so I researched and went with a projector mod. A lot of work but soooo worth it in the end. Now the DRL dilema begins. I don't want to fire my HID's up as DRLs. So I got a DRL modual from WEB Electronics (drl-01 UNIVERSAL) and got amber DRL's from my signal lights.

Works awesome but I have to run with my parking brake engaged just enough to disable the DRL circuit. Have yet to find a work around for that.

In your case, the WEB kit would be the ticket with no CAN BUS crap to deal with like we do.

Cheers,

bix
