Default 5th wheel prep kit

Got the rail kit adapter yesterday from the dealer. Used the VIN
to order it a few weeks ago, they said it should fit my 3500 when it
gets here. It does fit my Reese 16K slider!

Way to go! When my hitch got installed on my 1500 the mechanic got it about 1 inch too far fwd. He was paranoid about overloading the truck. The truck hauls the trailer great, but when you cut the wheel over hard, the trailer just touches the corner of the cab.

I ordered the prep kit on my 2500. I haul a 14k gooseneck so I went for the 6.4 hemi in an outdoorsman. It is supposed to haul 15.5k so we will see....I haul the trailer about 15 times a year.

If it does not work, I still have my duramax for a backup vehicle....

If you have a DMax, why tow with a gas engine? That Hemi will eat you up alive, when towing... Compared to the DMax, it'll eat you up, even when not towing....

BTW, that DMax w/Allison is a sweet combo!!

Do you have a slider hitch? Also, does your 5th wheel have the rounded or square corners?

I'm just wondering because I've got a 3500 SB on order and trying to decide if I want to go with the Andersen Ultimate 5th wheel hitch, standard, or slider hitch....

Thanks!

I only tow a 10 to 15 times a year and the Dmax I have is a 2003. It is getting long in the tooth and the towing capacity on the 2003 duramax 2500 with 5 speed Allison, isn't any more then the 2014, 2500 ram with a 6.4 hemi.

I just could not justify the maintenance cost or initial cost of another diesel for my limited seasonal towing (own a Christmas wreath business).

I am only loaded 1 way on my wreath deliveries. I towed my 10k trailer probably 10 times last year with a 5.7 Toyota and my trips we roughly costing me only about $30.00 more then towing with my diesel. I run about 800 to 1000 miles round trip....

So, I tossed it around pretty hard and decided on this as the best route. In 3 to 5 years when I finally replace my DMAX (keeping it as a second vehicle for now and back-up to the 6.4 hemi) I will probably get a single cab work truck diesel to replace the seasonal towing duties if the 2500 6.4 does not fare well.

On a side note, I have the lb7 Duramax and injectors already had me replacing 1 engine at the tune of $11k, 5 k miles out of warranty.
