Default Bed dimensions, strange

I like making things rather than buying them....and figured on making my own tonneau cover.
Turns out the bed is 3" wider at the cab end than the tail end, plus the rail tops are not flat......
Way to go, Dodge.....

I could not find any reason for the uneven bed rails under those plastic rail caps
it doesn't make any sense, unless Mopar made shells & tonneau covers that had to be that particular shape

With that much variance, it would have to be intentional... but I didn't notice it when installing my cover, unless it was designed to be 3" wider at the cab... but these covers are designed to fit more than one truck/manufacture... So, are other "trucks" like this too...

I built my own tonneau for a new Ram back in '94 and the bed was a little wider at the cab end back then too. I think that's standard. Can't remember if it was as much as 3" but it was significant.

Can anyone post a picture of what it looks like under the rail caps?

Probably a styling decision to get the look the designers wanted. If everything was square and at right angles we would just be driving bigger versions of the Nissan Cube with the back roof cut off.
