Default HEadliner Backing Too Thin?

I just removed the sagging headliner in my '96, pulled off the clothe and used a wire brush to remove the foam backing and all that remains is thin fiberglass. I watched some videos on replacing the material but the backing always seems to look stiff, like mine did before I removed the foam. It does not seem like the new material will work very well with a flimsy backing.

you should be fine just using 3m adhesive.. I just did mine yesterday and looked to have the same problem... the adhesive spray helps stiffen it back up

If you have a fabric store in your area you can usually fine headliner fabric there. It has the foam attached to it specifically for headliners.

I also use a product called Heads-Up. It's an adhesive made especially for headliners.

My re-upholstered headliner is flimsy, puckered, wrinkly, ugly. I took the headliner into an upholstery shop and was told that I removed too much foam backing. How is that possible? Would I not need a clean surface for the adhesive to work properly? They said that a scraper should have been used. How can just "some" of that old foam be left on the fiberglass? He made some inquiries and found a new shell but I am not able to afford to spend hundreds more. I have already spent over $40.

I would like to remove the new material and start over. Does anyone have some suggestions on something that I can apply to the backside of the fiberglass to stiffen it before I can apply some new material?
