Toss a bicycle in the back of the truck and ride it the last couple miles of your trip. I did the CAI, Muffler, Y-Pipe Swap, Tossed a cover on the bed and didn't notice much increase. There are slight gains when it is warm, but about typical in the winter. Your best friend is light acceleration and cruise control at about 65. My MPG drops like mad once I pass about 70mph. Then again I usually cruise at 80. and get about 15mpg. Only about 13mpg on streets with stop and go.

If you have EVIC and turn on the Fuel gauge. The white bar at the bottom gives you a decent idea of your efficiency. These trucks are big and it takes some power to get them going.

I find using the Cruise as much as possible. I even use it any time the speed limit is 35 or higher. I find I can average 17+ on most of my local roads. The only bad economy is bumper to bumper and in town 15-25 MPH.

So far:

45-55 secondary roads I average 19.5 and have seen as high as 20 average
65-72 highway average 18.5-19.0
35-45 roads, 16.5-17.5
Below 35 Varies 14-15.

I am impressed, with 800 miles, this is awesome. It is a full 2 MPG better than my 01 suburban, that the truck replaced, got. It's also got 100 more horses than the suburban too!

Today I drove to the airport. Used the cruise at all zones above 30. 45 miles, through town and back roads with a 50 speed limit. I set the cruise at 59 for most of the trip. Anyway, I cannot believe it, I averaged 21.2! 395 hp, 4wd, crew pickup with less than 1000 miles. I cannot believe it!

Average is a cross between highway and city driving so if you are getting 13.5 I would guess it is mostly local city driving. Not much room to stretch your legs in NJ unless you drive the Turnpike or Parkway. To much traffic in that state so it will be hard to increase the average to any significance.

Biggest effect you can have is to coast as much between traffic lights as you can when they turn red up ahead and do slow starts from dead stops and avoid high traffic times, rush hour.

Just to give you an idea of of average differences, I just completed a cross country trip and the average for one leg of the trip for my truck was 19.3 for 3,000 miles doing speed limits of 65 thru 75 mph and 1000 miles of mountain range stuck in for good measure. It was about 16.9 going back but that was because I ran into heavy rains and high head winds for about 1/4 of the trip

If I do local driving I am down to 13 to 14.5 depending on traffic and stoplights. My EPA average is 18 to 13 for this truck

I have no mods except a soft cover on the bed of the truck.

Did the same trip yesterday, same time but 30 degrees cooler (34 vs 64 F), anyway 19.5. So temp does matter!

Out here we have 70 and 80 speed limits, MDS dont work at these speeds, i have personall found that it gets as good of milage in tow/haul as in the MDS . only time mine hits MDS is going down hill with the3.55 gears, my o11 with 3.93 gears never hit MDS
