Default Confused about the 4.7 engine specs

the title of this forum contains:

Factory Spec: 4.7-liter V8 engine - 310 horsepower, 330 lb-ft of torque.

I have heard 235 hp mentioned and an HO version of 265 for the 4.7. I am totally confused as to what the actually specs are on my particular engine. When I registered for this site, I was asked which engine my truck has. To be honest I did not see the exact one I *think* I have.

The plastic has the words 4.7 Magnum molded into it. However the only choice in registration is Powertech. Never heard of Powertech until registering with this forum.

Don' t get me wrong. This engine has plenty of giddy-up for my needs. I just want to talk intelligently about my vehicle and it is hard to do so when you aren't sure of the engine specs. I imagine if I ever had to tear into the internals of the engine, the exact version would be very important for getting parts and such.

I had this same question when I owned my 2006 4.7L Ram. Maybe I can shed a little light for you.

Powertech is simply an advertising name given to an entire family of Chrysler engines, not just the 4.7L. You can read about it here if you would like although please note that I believe there is at least one significant mistake contained on this page (see below).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_PowerTech_engine

More importantly, the specs on the 4.7L are as follows. The 4.7L engine in 2002-2007 Rams was rated at 235hp/295tq. The 4.7L in 2008-up Rams featured a higher compression ratio and better flow and was rated at 310hp/330tq.

The 4.7L high output engine was produced from 2002 to 2007 and was rated at 265hp/330tq. The Wikipedia article linked above indicates that this engine was used in Dodge Ram trucks, however, this is where I believe that article is mistaken. I have yet to see any reference to a Ram equipped with the 4.7L HO engine anywhere else. Every single photo of the 4.7L HO engine shows it clearly stating "HIGH OUTPUT" or "H.O." on the intake resonator and I have yet to see one of these in a Ram. Also, the Wikipedia article for the Dodge Ram does not mention the 4.7L HO engine or list those power numbers being made by any Ram truck. Even more confusing is the fact that the Wikipedia article on the Powertech engines labels the high output engine as the 4.7L High Output/Magnum. I believe this to be incorrect as well. The 4.7L engines in the Rams were often referred to as the "Next Generation Magnum". This too was simply an advertising/marketing ploy and from what I can tell, "Magnum" did not apparently indicate that the engine was a high output version. I obtained the build sheet for my 2006 4.7L Ram from Chrysler (which had "Magnum" stamped into the resonator) and it did not indicate the high output engine.

So in summary, it's my belief (until someone shows me otherwise) that the 4.7L HO never came in any Ram and therefore you either have the less powerful first gen 4.7 or the stouter second gen 4.7 depending on your model year. Hope this helps!!

Good info, That being said, the 2010-2013 Ram 1500 with the 4.7l engine has the following specs. They are no longer available on the 2014's

310-hp, 4.7-liter V-8, iron block/aluminum cylinder heads, single overhead camshaft, two valves per cylinder, 330 pounds-feet of torque

Ahhh, yes, you are correct. I got my numbers confused there. I have edited my original post to reflect the correct horsepower number for the 2008-up 4.7L. Thanks for catching it.

Thank you both for the great information. That wiki article is confusing to say the least. Your great answers are most appreciated.

They pretty much summed it up.

It's amazing how an engine that is architecturally identical is so different. Almost no parts are interchangeable from the older 4.7 to the new 4.7.

I prefer to use the ALLPAR sites when it comes to anything MOPAR

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/47.html

if i recall correctly
the early engine was a 4.7 LA-engine
the later engine was the 4.7 Magnum

^depends who you ask. Some also call it the powertech. The best way to describe the engines is pre 08 and 08+
