Default OEM Step Bar Instalation - Nightmare

The other day I picked up the Chrome Step Bars from the dealer after receiving used SS ones. These are the cab length, and are for the 2013 Quad Cab. After inspecting them, I noticed the drivers side had gouges underneath that had been plated over, also the plastic on one bracket was all scratched up. I called the parts department and they checked another box for me; said the drivers side bar was good and to come in and exchange that bar. In the meantime, I started the install on the Passenger side. I was expecting the brackets to mount on the inside of the rocker panel and just screw in place. These brackets mount on the inside rocker and the lip. I really did not want to mount anything on the lip, but this is the style / part number for the 2013's. So, I made pads out of gasket material to prevent the e-clips from gouging the paint, siliconed the holes and attached the brackets. As I tightened the rear bracket to 7 lb ft at the lip, I heard a slight snap, and sure enough the metal flexed just enough to fleck the paint off the inside of the rocker (thankfully it was not on the outside) I was beyond annoyed. I had to remove the bracket and apply Rust Encapsulator paint and will now re-attach it today. Hopefully it does not happen on the Left side. As I installed the front bracket, the e-clip turned and slipped over the bracket and put a 1/8" gouge in the bottom of the rocker; I almost cried! At that point, I decided to pick up the replacement Step and get some touch up paint. Long story short, the replacement bar was the same as the one I had and they gave me a bottle of touch up "on the house". So today, I will hopefully finish the steps, and after applying he touch up last night, will apply a coat of clear.

Finished the installation yesterday and they look awesome. When tightening the left rear bracket, the paint slightly bubbled by one of the screws that attached to the lip. After further inspection, I noticed that the lip is slightly curved and the bracket is straight; when tightened, there is just enough flex to cause the paint to crack by the screw (s'). I touched it up with Rust Encapsulator and all is well. The rear brackets should be toward the front by about an inch or so to correct this situation. So for all who have the OEM step bars, check out the rear screws at the lip (especially if dealer installed) to make sure the paint has not chipped off causing future rust issues.

I have the OEM SS step bars on my 2013. Every time I washed the truck the step bars water spotted very bad. I even waxed them a couple of times and they still water spotted.

Took them off today and started to put Plastic Dip on them. I have to spray outside and it started to drizzle some rain and had to stop.

I liked the look of the stainless steel but the water spots were terrible.

I will have to inspect the mounting brackets for paint chips. Thanks for the heads up.
