I 'd go over her with a fine tooth comb for rust, but I'm from Maine. The only thing that I'd be worried about is the transmission. Drive it, not just around the block, but drive the hell out of her. Check that it shifts perfectly, no slip. Check the economy on the EVIC. Friend of mine bought a 2001 2500 Cummins and is pretty unhappy with the economy and lack of power. (He's driven my hemi). I'm not a big diesel fan, but the last year 5.9 Cummins Rams drive very nice, like 2004-2007 models.

Make sure the fuel system is good.. The injection pump and lift pump them 24 valves are known for the lift pump crapping out then the injection craps out from the extra work load. And if they both fail then your looking at $1500-$2000. Other then that just the transmission and front end parts are known aswell on these trucks. I'm in the process of getting a first gen 12 valve cummins right now.. Bullet proof trucks and great fuel milage

Track bar and steering column bearing are also common.
All in all they are pretty durable trucks, just a few quirks.

Crazy how you mentioned this dodgeboy because that's what did my father in laws 99 Cummins in at just 300K. Got himself a 2013 3/4 ton Cummins and they only gave him 2000 for his non running 99. But get this, it gave out just a couple of blocks before gettin to the dealership!

dodge man i would think if this was one of the "53 engines, it should be alright, it either was one of the few that wasn't affected or was repaired long ago. the rest were most likely melted down and are now heating someones home as a wood stove,

RE: lift, injection pumps. This is an issue. A bad lift pump can take-out the much more expensive injector pump. For this, alot of folks install a pressure gauge to monitor it, or a low-pressure cut-off switch to protect the injector pump. There is alot of information on the web to help you with this.

Awesome trucks. I had a 98 1/2 back then. The 5.9 is more deliberate than fast, pulls like a train, and if you keep your foot out of it will easily exceed 20 mpg. The issues with the truck and engine have been pretty much covered. I didn't see where you mentioned auto or manual. If manual, then the 5th gear nut tends to "unscrew" itself if you run the truck in 5th under 50 mph. It's not a catastrophic failure, but does take some doing to fix if it occurs. The body will fall apart before the engine wears out.
