What doesn't make sense to me, is that 100% of transmission losses convert to heat energy, and nothing else (unless there is noise energy), so a cold "inefficient" tranny will self heat from slippage. Why use precious needed heat( for engine efficiency) from a cold engine, or slip a TQ? Seems like you are just stealing needed energy from one area to feed another. I know my mileage suffers in the winter when the TQ doesn't lock, which makes the engine run faster turning the un-needed mechanical fan faster etc...
The main temperature-related factor is the transmission fluid viscosity. The trans fluid is thinner at higher temps. So the trans efficiency is higher (at higher temps) because the fluid is easier to pump and move (like squeezing it out of the gear teeth as they mesh).

With government standards mandating higher and higher fuel economy (why is it any of the government's business how much fuel economy my vehicle gets?!?), manufacturers are being forced to do lots of "unnatural" things to meet the standards. Like making your transmission run at 180F instead of 130F. This will actually reduce the life of your transmission (cooler is better for longevity), but your friends in the government care more about fighting "global warming" than they do about how long your vehicle lasts (or how much it costs, or how well it performs).

I'm in the old MTBE belt. We loose 1-1/2mpg just from the latest mandated state of the art "winter blend" fuel".
TransEngineer: Wish you could give me a tip on how to get the converter to lock up as normal in the cold.
I'll gladly conduct and post a cold weather mpg test comparison.

Where do you find the "cool tube"? I have searched in google but can't find anything.
I would like to get it in red and use for some dressing up under the hood.

How DARE you call them my friends!!!! And to think I thought WE were friends.

The couple times my trans has been up at 180+ I've noticed it seems like it's "slipping" when it shifts.

Sean, you are right! I should have said, "... but our "friends" in the government...."

I just don't understand it, I remember 10 years ago vehicles were getting significantly better fuel economy. Now with all the "improvements" they are getting the same or worse. Of course some of it has to do with the fuel as well(ethanol), yet another thing controlled by "our friends".

Sorry to get off topic...

Anything that the government tries to "improve" only gets worse!

And if we want to get REALLY off-topic.... just look at how they're "improving" our health care system! (Don't even get me started.. I could go on for hours...)

I concur with the oil temp. That's why I am working on a solution in the way of an engine oil cooler....

In regards to the transmission, I would look at shielding the cat, drop down a piece of aluminium from the well separate of the trans lines, that way the lines dissipate heat and the cat is shielded from giving off excessive heat.
