Default Performance Transmission. ATS, SharaDon, orrrr??????

Well im at 30k miles and my trans is going out for the second time... Tomorrow i find out if its still under warranty. If its not im going to be looking at replacing the whole damn thing because im not dealing with this again. My question is what transmission is recommended for our truck that will handle the power and is virtually bullet proof?

For those who have installed a different trans what one did you get and what did you notice?

None of them are 100% bullet proof. And looking at your current mods, you shouldn't be anywhere near needing a fully built trans. My recommendation would be to swap out the valve body to improve the shifting; this will give you much firmer shifts which means you won't have the long, slow, comfortable shifts like the stock trans does and this is what causes so much of our failures in the 545rfe. Sharadon has a Stage II and a Stage III and I enjoyed the stage III in my old ram running built top end, cam, and a 125 shot.

If you're set on a fully built trans then get in touch with Mike at L&M. His trans is the best so far of all of them out there for holding bigger power numbers. I'm running one of these in my new truck and it's been great so far. Once the engine is tuned properly then we'll see how well it holds up.

yeah i know im not pushing 1000+ hp but i dont want the trans to go out ever again and from what ive read these trans arent the greatest to begin with. i do plan on getting a couple more mods like 87mm TB 3000 stall torque converter and headers before the year is over. i figured that if i get a trans that can handle 1000hp it would be problem free with 500 and my lead foot.

so what you are saying though is a new valve body would make my trans stronger?

With your current and future mods you're looking at around the 350-375rwhp at the highest. The stock trans takes 400-425 reliably and after that it begins slipping and burning out. A new valve body would make a world of difference as it doesn't allow the trans to have time to slip by having much firmer shifts. Unless you're planning head work, a cam, or a power adder, then I would go with the VB swap and save yourself the extra $3K.

CdnoilRAM, i have the same question. i have alot more mods then he does though. Have never dynoed my exact HP but stock on these trucks says 390 which i am guessing is at the flywheel, so i am guessing im pushing close to 425 to the wheels with what i got. Not to mention pushing the Lift and 37 inch tires. Thanks

I have a 6 inch suspension Lift with a 1.25 inch bodylift. 37inch toyo MTs, Airaid Intake, JBA shorty headers. MBRP Catback performance exhaust, Superchip Programmer, Ported Throttle Body. Looking to input new camshaft and ported heads. hoping that my transmission wont go out due to the power, but would love to know if i should be ready to replace it or not.

You should be fine with your stock trans with what you have. Your HP numbers wont be 425 at the wheel with what you have. You would need a cam and some heads to maybe think about needing a better trans.

To add to that, you'd need to be looking at a BIG cam and ported heads before you would be thinking about a transmission. With the big rubber you have, you want a torque cam, something like a Comp 260, which won't put a whole lot of stress on your transmission anyways.

Just my two cents; I am a Master Dodge Tech with an '04 Hemi Ram 1500 2wd reg cab with approx 450 flywheel horsepower. I am baffled to hear that you (brondondolon) have had two transmission failures! In my opinion, this is the best transmission Chrysler has ever built. With all my engine mods (2:02 ported heads, big cam, headers and exhaust, cold air, custom programming, and a 3000 stall convertor), at 97,000 HARD miles (third set of tires with track time in Las Vegas) my trans has never failed. In my opinion one of the biggest limiting factors (for the differentials too) is the shallow pan and soft shifts. I installed the Transgo shift package and a deep pan on mine. Besides the 3000 stall convertor, pan and shift kit, my trans is completely stock with zero failures.

Being a transmission man at the dealers, I have only seen one of these truly fail. This is why Chrysler decided to beef it up a little and put it behind the Cummins. I would look at Sharadon's upgrades and also try PATC's web site (http://www.transmissioncenter.com/45..._and_Parts.htm) if you want to rebuild yours.

As soon as I install my 410 stroker, I'll be looking at Sharadon myself. Whatever you do, I strongly recommend a deep pan like the one I have (yourcovers.com). I hope this helps.

545re best OEM transmission from Chrysler? Mine has quite a few bolt ons and my trans is still rocking but i make sure i don't go to 4th at WOT and avoid 2nd prime or, BADABOOM. Also make sure that no custom tcm values are done to it or BIG-BADABOOM
