Default 30k maintenance rip-off?

just got a call from my dodge dealer with the cost of my 30k maintenance, oil change, and state inspection for my 08 Ram 1500 Sport. Total so far is $1275, yes thats right $1275! plus i'll still need a new battery but dont want to pay oem prices.

They said that price includes flushing all fluids except for front diff cuz 'thats not needed at this time', new spark plugs, and new tie rods to pass inspection.

The tie rods are the hardest to believe, the truck is barely at 30k miles plus i've already had the tie rods replaced at 15K under a factory recall. Is it even possible that a truck thats obviously not a daily driver and that is otherwise treated like a queen with no noticeable problems while driving could need its 3rd set of tie rods within 30k???

My questions are ... Does it seem right that a truck thats NEVER been off road with so few miles already need extensive flushing of fluids etc and tie rods??

Btw, my dealer tried to end on a positive note assuring me that my oil change would be half price and I 'only' have a $100 deductible under my extended warrantee for the tie rods this time, so my total is 'only $1275' Hey thanks Buddy! Oh and get that new battery as soon as you can!

Since when did quality reliable truck = money pit? or am i being scammed?

Sounds like the dealer is being less than honest with you. I would try another dealer or good independent ASE certified shop.

my thoughts too but im running out of local dodge dealers, i was already banned from the lot of the dealer i bought the truck from. Apparently they dont like when you hand out flyers to customers on their lot listing all the problems you've had with that dealer after the last signature was written and all the promises that were ignored after the sale.

My major problem is that my extended warranty is only covered by certified dodge dealers and all maintenance has to be done by such a dealer or it is void.

I usually do most of my own work but sometimes I do farm it out. My truck is in the shop right now and they are replacing my tie rods and axle joints on my 3/4 ton Ram. They are also doing a front end alignment. This will cost me around $900 but its an independant shop.

I've seen weak tie rods on Chrysler products. Aftermarket ones (Moog) are much better and will last a lot longer. Is $1200 the going rate for the work they did? Maybe. Is it fair? NO! Thats the problem with extended warranties. They try and lock you in for all the work and thats how they make money.

If you have an extended warranty and the tie rod ends are bad.....then they should be covered under warranty?? Or am i missing something?

My question is why not change the fluid in the front diff if the rear diff had to be changed? Also what is the breakdown on that $1275??

Oil change
Trans Service?
Rear diff Service?
Transfer case Service?
Coolant flush?

What's the hourly rate?

The dealerships just look in the manual to see when they check the service intervals
they don't look at part & do an real inspection, like a repair shop would do
( i always ask any shop for the old parts, before i let them begin the work, unless the part requires a Core charge, then i look at the part after it comes out )

if you want the truth about the condition of the tie rods
go to a ASE certified shop that does alignments, usually they will give you a FREE Inspection, hoping to get your business

your battery if it is the Original battery, really needs to be changed, they are usually good for 4 years of dependable service

at 42,000 miles i had my spark plugs changed, they looked almost new
at about the same time, i went to a ASE Certified shop & had the transmission & rear end fluids changed, i went with Royal Purple fluids

at 50,000 miles i had the coolant system & power steering fluids changed at the dealership

this last June, my Ram had 83,000 miles, my battery was at least 4 years & 4 months old & may have been 4 years & 8 months old
i noticed that i was starting to have indications of a battery going away, i run my headlights all the time & i also have 2 orange rotating lights that i run while i am working. I had a Interstate Battery installed

i am about to go to another ASE certified shop to replace my shock absorbers & get my brakes checked for wear
i am at 96,000 miles now
IF the brakes need to be serviced, i will also get the brake fluid flushed

SCAM. You have extended warranty with what kind of deductibles??? Tie rod's replaced at 15K on factory recall, and now bad again 15K later???? What kind of factory junk was installed??? I'm am throwing in the official B.S. Flag. There is no way in HE77 that cost's even 1/2 that. IMO, they are flat out screwing you.

I have to agree with oldhp on this one. At only 30k miles most of that work shouldn't need to be done. Oil change yes, and possibly the rear diff (unlikely though) but none of the other fluids should need to be flushed. What does the maintenance section of your manual say as far as what is required for the 30k service? I could see it saying to check all those fluids but I doubt it says to replace them.

As far as the tie rod ends go that's complete BS. Even at 30k they should be 100% fine but since yours were replaced once already they shouldn't need to touch them at all. I'd say it's definitely time to try out a new dealership.

Almost $1300 for THAT? That is insane. Like the other guys have said, go find another dealer. Even if it means taking a long drive.
